How much is customer service worth? NVR manufacturer OpenEye says that it's Customer Service is 'heroic', and that is why you should choose them. But who is OpenEye and should you choose them against bigger brand offerings? In this note, we examine OpenEye's claims and product offerings comparing them to well known options in the market.

Support Claims

OpenEye claims the following key support differentiators:

  • 24/7 phone support
  • No recurring licensing or fees for VMS, IP channels, mobile, or remote software solutions
  • Three Year basic Warranties plus One Year advance replacement
  • 'Out of Warranty Repair' policy that charges 'time and materials' to repair units, or new units at discounted prices

Company Background

While OpenEye is not well-known, the company has been a surveillance manufacturer for over a decade. The company's core is designing and manufacturing video recording appliances, although it does resell branded analog and IP cameras. Until recently, the bulk of OpenEye's sales have come from OEM agreements. The 'private branding' business still represents a large part of total revenues, however OpenEye has expanded selling its own branded products.

The company believes that protecting sales territories and distribution is a key part of its sales strategy. OpenEye branded product is sold through an approved dealer program and through select distributors, and aggressively polices its sales channel. OpenEye officially states it will not honor service or warranty requests on product purchased outside of authorized partners.

Product Overview

OpenEye's VMS, a platform called Radius [link no longer available], is unified across the entire analog, hybrid, and IP platform product line, excluding the entry EasyDVR product. With Radius VMS, mix and matching OpenEye products are viewable and managed through a single application.

Currently, OpenEye's 'flagship' product is the N-Series IP only NVR appliance. In the section below, we detail that offering:

OpenEye sells NVRs as preconfigured servers only. They say this 'minimizes incompatibilities of server components' and results in a tested hardware platform. While special buying arraignments for software-only purchases exist, the company only sells prebuilt servers through the integrator channel. The N-Series NVR features:

  • ONVIF compliant
  • Support for both server side and camera side motion detection
  • Support for Active Directory
  • Free DDNS service
  • 2TB - 6TB of direct attached storage, with Ultra-320 SCSI interface for external options

OpenEye uses a traditional security dealer discount model.

Health Monitoring

OpenEye also offers a remote health monitoring utility, called ReportStar, that is furnished free with all devices. This device management utility can be 'private branded' with the dealer's information, and is associated with the NVR during initial setup. The end user is able to check up on all owned OpenEye NVRs, regardless of model or series, and can be configured to send alerts on preselected intervals or only on trouble conditions. The primary features of ReportStar include:

  • Camera Image Verification, updated twice daily: shows a thumbnail of the current camera view, demonstrating proper orientation and features like IR illumination is working at night
  • Health Monitoring: Verify connectivity of cameras, performance of storage drives
  • Recording duration compliance: Evaluates how many days of storage total volumes are recording
  • Critical system errors: ReportStar logs system OS and recording system exception events
  • Camera signal loss: If a camera 'drops off', the utility generates a report as soon as it occurs

Comparison

Because of OpenEye's limited software only availability, applications and competitive comparisons for OpenEye are constrained. While the value of software only vs appliances can be debated, clearly a large portion of the industry now prefers software only. As such, for those that require software only, unless you have a large project, OpenEye is likely not a good fit. Likewise, it would be hard to compare OpenEye vs VMS providers that focus on software only, like Milestone and OnSSI.

For pricing, OpenEye's NVRs likely come in moderately higher than Exacq and moderately lower than Genetec SV-PRO but much higher than the NVR NAS options, like QNAP and Synology. From what we see of their feature sets comparisons to professional VMS/NVRs are more appropriate than NVR NASes. That said, we cannot tell how competitive OpenEye's NVRs are as we have not tested them.
