Wrong To Use Driver's License Photos For Criminal Search?

An interesting contention from a lawyer at the EFF:

People who are in a driver’s license database did not agree to be part of a criminal search every time the police are looking for a suspect. A civil photograph should not be subject to search for criminal purposes.

This is from an NY Times article: Newspaper Shooting Shows Widening Use of Facial Recognition by Authorities.

What do you think? Fair point? Not?

Well, we may not have agreed but what is the difference? Driving is a privilege, not a right. Each state could make it mandatory when getting a new license or renewing, that you consent. So within a few years, you will either have consented or will be using public transportation.

Not sure I follow the logic of your argument...

You offer that 'we may not have agreed' -  and then defend that opener with 'driving is a privilege'?  How is that a defense of the govt using civil databases as a tool for criminal investigations without prior consent or oversight?

Then you further state that if states just now add the language in a disclaimer that forces people who want to be able to continue to drive to agree to have their DL pics used in criminal investigations - that this future act can somehow absolve guilt in prior, unregulated acts.  This is just a silly supposition, imo.

Fair. There are too many people to separate the good from the bad. If you don't want to have a photo that identifies you so you can authenticate yourself when a situation is needed then simply don't have a driver license or ID card. See how far it makes sense to not participate with a system that has many resources for many situations. If you have something to hide, then hide it. Live with the fact that you have to hide something while others do not.

Soon your DNA will be proofed from your cell phone or any cell phone or computer you use. This will become mandatory to allow someone to connect to a global system that contains everything we have done since inventing it. The day will may come soon where everyone will be digitally identified before every using any piece of technology and guess what...there is nothing you can do about it. Human rights have to change as we are now a global culture and not some disconnected paranoid free-body in the midst of a jungle.

Justice evolution integration with technology must be practice otherwise we have people still running around with a Windows XP mindset.

It might hurt in the beginning, but I am tired of clingy micro intellect individuals from every nook and cranny trying to over step the clingy micro intellect individual competing from the other side of the library. In this case, the lawyer tossing what may be a valid cog into the system today, will most likely be bull***t tomorrow.

Soon all your identification will belong to us. Expect it.

Let everyone cry a river, complain and express their micro revolts of discombobulated logic or perhaps one of you Brainiac's can actually solve the equation without becoming a tyrant or dictator. I simply say let technology take it's place as it can do a lot more good than bad. No I do not want to hear about AI, as none of us have experienced it yet and can only speculate different outcomes, you too Elon Musk.
