What Do You Listen To While Driving??

I do a lot of driving, as I am sure most of us do. My further customer is a 7 hour drive. I am also an information/knowledge junkie. I love to learn! I do have satellite radio, however I have been listening to podcasts, audio books a lot more lately. The topic is something always worthwhile. I even found a "learn spanish while you drive" cd that I listen to often.

I am curious as to what you folks listen to? News radio? Talk radio? Music? If so what type of music? Audiobooks? Podcasts?

Thanks

When I started regional travel I would use audio books. That was later replaced with Satellite which provided a mix of news / talk / music / comedy.  Driving home safely and staying alert after a long day, late at night (or even early morning hours), was made easier when I could listen to a show that would hold my interest for an hour at a clip.

So I have a specific, for no reason, habit for listening. Around my home city, local talk radio almost exclusively. Trips of 1-3 hours are with music. Longer drives 3-5 hours, Ill generally listen to podcasts (Marc Maron WTF, Joe Rogan Experience, etc).

Hmmmm, I listened to Joe Rogan first time yesterday as he was interviewing Dr. Jordan Pederson. Jordan Pederson and Sam Harris I really enjoy.

Podcasts if I'm in a good mood, music if I've had a rotten day or if I'm tired.

I also have a specific playlist for certain moods and circumstances. For example, a beautiful day like yesterday called for rolling down all the windows and listening to Jimmy Buffett. I listen to heavy metal or EDM to get myself pumped before a big meeting. And so forth.

Pandora, Napster

I thought about more educational items but I feel like it's the only time I get a break from work.

Side question, what do you use to capture thoughts when driving? I am trying Google Keep.

Google Keep, thanks!! I am always looking for these kinds of tips.

My 2015 dodge caravan has a memo feature built in. I hit the button and it asks what you want to do. I say to create memo and I can then talk and save the memo. I used it everyday. Its doesn't have much space for recording, about 10 quick memos, but sure is handy when driving.  At least I can jot them down when I arrive at my destination. I have a good memory but its short...

I have pretty much everything in my car: ham radio, police scanners, AM/FM/CD/satellite radio, etc., but lately have been spending a lot of time listening to YouTube videos of speeches given by notable people.

Recent speakers have included the Shark Tank folks (Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary), Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jamie Dimon, Henry Kissinger and many others. I love hearing the biographies and life stories of people who have been successful in their fields, even if may disagree with them politically.

I spend lots of time on the road - but somewhat differently than regional sales types.

Every other week (on average) I do 3 day VMS classes at various locations around the US (primarily) - and I hate to fly if I can avoid it.

I live in Raleigh, NC and the average drive time to class locations is at least 5-6 hours, with others (like my class in Orlando next week, and my many N Jersey classes) that are at least 8-9 hours.

So I don't generally drive short distances...

Like Michael above, I like to have lots of choices. This gives me options based on my mood.

Like Ari above, the music I listen to depends largely on how I am feeling at the time.

EDM is always a staple.... I dig the repetitive beats and I have a large collection of EDM that I always travel with.  Makes the drive seem like it takes less time.

Classic rock allows me to sing along since I generally know the words, and I have fond memories of Foghat's Slow Ride (full version) blaring on the radio as I flawlessly ripped off the air guitar intro crossing the border from WV into Ohio back in the day...

If my rental car has satellite, I listen to a lot of Howard Stern (Sirius XM - channels 100 and 101).

Variety is the key, imo.

I listen to local sports radio. There's nothing like homer sports talk to get you ultra pumped up about how unbeatable your favorite team is.

Howard Stern on Sirius as he has some great interviews. Mike Stafford on AM640 in Toronto as he is just great to listen too. Sarcastic, lots of pop culture references taken in a contrarian perspective, and generally just a funny talk show host.

Podcasts are a must.  Mostly to improve my leadership skills in business and to listen to entrepreneurs. My top three podcasts are:

The GaryVee Audio Experience

The Tim Ferris Show

Leadership and Business

For long trips, the podcasts at CocaineandRhinestones.com will make a 6 hour drive seem like 2 hours. They are riveting. Whether you are a fan of country music or not, you will find them fascinating. The kid puts about 100 hours into each podcast. Highly recommend.

A few years ago I decided to stop wasting time while I was driving or at the gym (doing cardio not lifting weights) listening to music. I'll never forget it. I was at the gym working out, and I thought to myself, boy this is a real waste of time. Let's kill two birds with one stone. Then I got my audible subscription.

I mostly listen to audiobooks through Audible. It's the best $30 I spend a month. I will on average listed to 3-4 books every month. There's so much to learn that you can't possibly learn everything only reading at night.

I try and keep a mix of entertainment and educational books in my library and try to go outside of my comfort zone from time to time. I'm currently listening to the Cameron Diaz Longevity Book. Fascinating read.

I also have a Sirus subscription, so I do listen to music and the news in the car for short drives to and from work or the gym. Anything over 15 minutes gets an audiobook.

"A few years ago I decided to stop wasting time while I was driving"

I completely disagree with that perception.

I use drive times to review anything I just did if I am driving from something - or conversely - to work through scenarios that will occur if I am driving to something.

Driving from:

How could I have made it better?

What worked and what did not?

What didn't I know?

Driving to:

What is going to happen?

How can I make this upcoming thing more beneficial (to me and whomever will be there at this upcoming thing)?

What don't I know?

EDM is mindless repetitive beat.... which I find highly conducive to reflection and/or review.

It's easier to think about such things when you got Funk in the Trunk

Youtube - defcon, blackhat and other con talks streaming at 144p, really not going to look at it if it's such low resolution making it better off on driving and better off on data.

A mixed bag depending on where I am going and how long it's going to take me. When I first started doing longer trips (8 hours) I started listening to satellite radio, because of the gaps in FM radio. A lot of the comedy shows on Sirius. Got roped into the Jason Ellis Show on Sirius for awhile, but now don't really spend enough time in the car to listen regularly.

On another long trip (13 hours or so) realized Audiobooks and podcasts helped the time pass a bit quicker.

Now my regular commute is like 6 minutes, and occasionally I may have to drive a half our or so to a store, so news radio or music.
