Viakoo Marketing Guy Learns About PoE

Fresh off of failing to get DHS to change national video surveillance regulations, Viakoo's marketing guy is now learning about PoE.

It takes him 5 minutes to explain this basic concept:

Many switches do not provide sufficient PoE power for powering IP cameras, especially when there are lots of IP cameras connected and they consume a lot of power each (IR, PTZ, etc.). In such cases, camera connections can randomly disconnect causing problems, something we addressed years ago in PoE Power Problems.

Here is his video:

What is interesting and disappointing is that he never clearly explains how Viakoo specifically determines that the problem is due to PoE power overload.

I voted this unhelpful because I felt like I lost 3 IQ points for watching that video.

Next time, I'll put an appropriate warning before the video....

In all seriousness though, that video does them a disservice. It's like the guy has just learned about something that should really be basic knowledge required to actively do his job.

It baffles me why sales and marketing people like to showcase how little they know about their company's technology / domain. Perhaps they think that makes them personable or relatable but if you are trying to position your company as a leader / specialist in an area, best not to broadcast that you are learning the basics.

I thought the company responses to the previous Viakoo post were very professionally and competently done. This video did not seem to be of the same quality. Most marketing videos contain humor or points of interest to keep viewers engaged.

Once you have ruled out Sunspots what else could it be?

When I was an integrator, there was a guy who literally thought that there were ghosts inside of computers. If he hit a problem he couldn't solve, he'd start ranting about them.

POE vodoo is a very deep well for a non techie sales pitcher.
