Using Openalpr API?

We had a client/site ask us recently about integrating OpenALPR into their VMS.  I see that there's an API that we can call with an image, but it seems pretty expensive for that data - to me at least.  Is anyone else using it?  Just wondering what the use case is for it, and if clients see the value?  Are there any VMS plugins for it, or would we have to write some custom code to handle the API calls?
