Using Camio With VMS / Larger Scale

Jon D:

I purchased a CamIO box to test out. I will see how well it works on a small scale before making a leap with a big client.

Michael M:

I have one too.  Again the issue is upload speed many cameras at one site will cause an issue if you don't have a really good upload speed.

Jon D:

I don't plan on using it as designed. I plan on using Spectrum as a VMS and run CamIO as a VM and send the metadata to Spectrum as bookmarks.

Michael M:

Does CamIO now integrate with 3rd party VMS platforms like this?  How would you search for "people wearing blue" in Spectrum unless you define all your rules up front?

Yea they need a standalone box for the processing where you don't need the cloud.  My understanding they have a VM based product now but I think it still needs the cloud to function. Also the pricing model for large customers isn't going to go over well at $19.99 a month per camera.

Note: we have tested Camio Natural Language Processing here.

The system not designed for conventional commercial / enterprise use. The technology is really interesting and novel for video surveillance but not packaged in a way that makes sense for most large scale professional applications.

Camio is working on a metadata only version. I can't give you exact dates (they can if they'd like), but it could be soon.

This would essentially leave video local and only send data to the cloud for processing, which should be pretty low bandwidth.

The bigger issues are how those events integrate to anyone else and licensing cost. We'll see how those are addressed.

The primary variable in the launch date for the Camio  metadata-only version is the work for serving the video files for playback. The user experience is the same as shown in the examples http://go.camio.com/quickdemo.

Camio will rely on a simple proxy server that knows how to serve video files that match a particular timestamp range, since the metadata-only search results reference only timestamps.

So if you have particular VMS or NVR systems that you'd like to connect first, then please email partners@camio.com so we can prioritize and give you a launch date.

The metadata-only approach uses only 50 kbps per camera (assuming a continuously busy camera), so the average upload speed of a single cable connection in the US (18Mbps) handles 360 cameras.

If users view video from outside of the local network for sustained periods, then the bandwidth used by those long-lasting streaming connections has to be subtracted from the available bandwidth.

These slides outline 3 ways to use Camio with VMS, NAS, or batch import:
http://go.camio.com/mo

metadata-only deployment

Camio is launching batch import first only because of immediate customer need. But if you have a site with 100+ cameras that needs fast search and alerts while leaving the video on-premise, then contact partners@camio.com to participate in the beta.

The target price is the same as camio.com/price.

Carter, so what VMS(es) work or will soon work with Camio?

Milestone works with Camio today via RTSP streams. But you have to look up their GUID for each RTSP stream unfortunately (we haven't yet found a programatic way to enumerate all the available RTSP streams).

For this new metadata-only approach, we have to create a video proxy server that knows how to fetch a video clip stored in Milestone given a timestamp. That's the work that we don't want to do until a customer wants it.

But you have to look up their GUID for each RTSP stream

You mean like this?

47d52a9f-c55e-4be6-9244-868acbb30dcc

How does one do that or remember that?

And who is this 'one'? The person using the XProtect Smart Client or?

Yes, their ONVIF Bridge Getting Started Guide describes how to get the GUID:

Tip: The camera GUID is available in Management Client. To find the GUID, select the recording server where the camera has been added, and then select the camera. Click the Info tab, press and hold CTRL on your keyboard, and then click the camera’s video preview.

If your camera is47d52a9f-c55e-4be6-9244-868acbb30dcc, then you use this as the RTSP URL with Camio:

rtsp://{{ip_address}}:554/live/47d52a9f-c55e-4be6-9244-868acbb30dcc

I'm not sure how many are using Milestone with Camio, but the one that led us to this info was a nice integrator named Mark from Toronto.

Ok, so the GUID is just needed by the integrator / tech during setup, yes?

What does the Camio / Milestone integration look like from the end user / operator's perspective?

Camio

Yes, correct. The integrator has to lookup the GUID of each stream only once when connecting the stream to Camio Box.

The end user / operator sees no difference from their perspective. It's just another RTSP video stream just as if it were direct from any other camera or NVR.

John,

Ganz CORTROL had integrated Camio at native level.

  • So you can do Camio NL Searches directly in the VMS client, and from the search results
    • You can seamlessly switch to any of the regular VMS playback modes.
    • You can Add bookmark in the main archive that can share with authorized users
    • You can export the result with bookmarks.
  • You can link Camio-Specific-Events(ex. ‘mailman approaching’) to any VMS action resources such as PTZ, Access Control, Relay outputs, etc.
  • Camio connects to a Cortrol Central server only. So you don’t have to warry about where your cameras are in the network topology, when you set them up for Camio AI. Just pick and chose your camera in the list.
