Use Of IP Camera As A Web Cam

Not a usual discussion topic here, but I have a need to put in a high resolution camera to provide simple jpeg snapshots and/ or potentially a "thin" live stream to a web site "webcam" page. Just wanted to know if anyone has experience of optimal cameras for this purpose. Can be an internal or external camera as I have several mounting options. Problems experienced include the camera needing a user name and password and not being able to simply submit these from the URL. Want a good HD or higher resolution product.

While I think many IP cameras could be used for this via FTP I remember back in the early days of IP we bought a couple cameras from a company called Stardot. Their "Netcam" line is geared towards "web attractions". We used a couple of their cameras (for simple surveillance) before switching to Axis but the ones we did deploy are still in service ~7 years later (5MP cameras) so they sell a quality product. I don't have any experience with the requested application but just thought Stardot may actually have some advantages over other manufacturers, based on their advertising.

Almost every modern IP camera supports RTSP or HTTP video streams. Some even allow anonymous users, so you won't need to supply credentials in the URL string. Your issue may be a supported CODEC for playback, if choosing video encoded with H.264/H.265. You can simply use MJPEG for easier compatibility, but at the cost of added bandwidth needed.
