Use NVR As Inexpensive Decoder?

I have 2 IP cameras in 2 holovision intercoms. I need to get the video from each of those to an older Crestron touch screen that only supports composite video.  Wondering if anybody has used cheap NVRs instead of spending the bucks on decoders.   I could probably get 2 Hikvision or OEM NVRs without hard drives for less money then the decoders that I have seen.

thoughts?

It's an option if cost is of priority.  However, I would have concerns about reliability using an NVR in such a fashion.  No one likes seeing a login screen, setup screen, or a bunch of alerts when they expect just a video feed.  IMO it is a higher maintenance option.

Thanks for the reply.  I believe the NVR could be set to not need to login and alerts turned off. Right now I’m looking at about 500.00 cost per decoder vs a couple hundred for a cheap NVR no internal HD.

Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?

What decoder and which NVR(s) are you looking at?

I would hazard a guess that the skewed pricing is because of the low volume of decoders sold/produced in comparison to NVRs.

Hi

If you choose the right DVR (4 channels +1IP), the composite output could be set up as a secondary screen without any issues not like the main screen.

I'd be interested to know how this works out for you Brad. I have used a HikVision DVR as an encoder for a HikVision NVR, but  I haven't tried setting one up as a decoder before.

As an example, the DS-7204HUHI-F1/N would work for your intentions. It can support up to two IP cameras, in addition to four analog cameras. It has one CVBS spot video output.

The trick question is if those cameras are ONVIF compliant/confirmant? Their datasheet says yes, but I've found that datasheets are sometimes wrong. Something you would need to test before selling the solution.

And on another note, why are you selling a penny solution to someone who coughed up Crestron money? Hell the site license costs more than these two decoders combined! Tell them to write a bigger check LOL!

J/K about that last part... ;)

 Hi Jon,

I’m selling a cheap solution because the guy who spec’d the job didn’t think about this aspect. And there’s nothing left in the budget.

Thank you for the response!

I did it years ago to feed a hick made nvr with analog cams before they had hybrid units. Still works as far as I know. What a wonderfull world it would be with endless customers on unlimited budgets!
