Ubiquiti Edgeswitch Vs. Unifi Switch: Which One Should I Use?

We have been using Ubiquiti's EdgeSwitch line for a couple of years now and it's been pretty solid. But I just noticed pricing is over $100 lower on the 24 port Unifi Switch, about $400 instead of over $500. On paper they look pretty similar, so what's the difference?

I know Unifi needs the controller to configure it which is a disadvantage sometimes, but if we're just running a dedicated network with no monitoring or anything, does it matter? Is anyone else using these and have any reason I shouldn't switch to Unifi?

You have to have a controller with UNIFI.  Meaning you have to have a Cloudkey, onsite server or hosted server.   We have tested UNIFI on a couple of deployment and it has worked but since our camera networks don't have a WAN connection it makes managing UNIFI systems more challenging then Edge switches.  Also, don't forget to check out UNMS if you're using Edge switches.

Edge if you want to geek out. Check out Ben Pin or Crosstalk Solutions they are a good starting point for setting up out of the box. I only Unifi if using the APs.

Keep a set up running on the bench, always fun to troubleshoot and try out different configurations when bored at work. Back up your work! Those configs can be used in deployment.

We have also run into issues with the 10GB UNIFI fiber switch connecting to 10GB servers. To get our demo server to connect to our UNIFI switches I had to order a 10GB Edge switch to use in the middle.

Good to know. I have 5 ES-48s + 2 ES-16G that I am going have in the field soon. I hope all my LAGs come together without a hitch. I seen some issues on the UBNT forum threads regarding 1.73 FW release, however some if not all is fixed in 1.74 regarding the SFP+ connections, packet loss and connection intermittently dropping out. Fingers crossed.

I am running 3.9.27.8537 on the 16XG and it will not connect to anything but another UNIFI device when using 10GB fiber.

An EdgeSwitch 16 XG (firmware 1.7.4.5075842) that is connected to an HP 2920-24G+PoE+ (firmware #WB.16.06.0006) via LACP has not experienced any problems for more than two years with various firmware upgrades.

Furthermore, the ES-16-XG is connected to two servers both are LACP--one server is running an OEM Mellanox ConnectX-3 VPI 40GbE adapter, another is on an Intel X520-DA2.

For about one year, a MikroTik CCR1036 router successfully ran LACP to the ES-16-XG.

It's a combo of FiberStore (11559), Intel SR Optics (903239), and "10Gtek for Ubiquiti" 2m DACs on the ES-16-XG.

However, due to all of the XG issues posted at Ubnt... it looks like a roll of the dice, but my initial impression was Intel Xenon-D 10GBASE-T and the XG doesn't mix and DAC can be a crapshoot.

Thank you for your reports. Agree that no DAC is not worthwhile with XG It may fair well but would rather bulk up on SFP+ modules and patches. How many 2920s are you supporting via the 16 XG?

Thank You!
