This Entranceway Camera- Good Idea Or Bad Idea?
Looks like they mounted a (Mobotix) panoramic camera just over the door. On the one hand, they can see people on the stoop and on the sidewalk in front. My guess is that this is more to prevent trash dumping and loitering than to see people coming in and out of the building. Still, that camera seems pretty vulnerable to me.
Thoughts?
If it's the Q-24 they offer a vandalism set. From the data sheet:
"• Vandalism Set for Q22/Q24 Sec Models • Composed of - stainless steel cover (polished or matt) - safety screws - lens protector (3 mm polycarbonate) • Designed for use under extremely harsh conditions •"
I think if they are using that set it makes a difference. Assuming the doorway is 7 feet high, I'd say the camera is mounted 10 feet up and its above a staircase based on the railings in the picture. Tough call but I think it could survive.
Update: some better photos.
Oh, and motivation: some panhandler slashed a guy with a knife last October. The store shows a photo of the door with no camera on it.
But how good is the thai restaurant next door?
I vote that camera's a good idea. In addition, sometimes you want to see the Yum-Yum daily specials without getting up.
I'd paint it pigeon poo gray.
I don't think that's a Mobotix camera. It has a bubble over the lens that Mobotix does not have. And it looks like it might have built-in IR.
If they're trying to cover the whole area with detail, it's going to be a terrible idea. People exiting and entering are going to be at a harsh angle. People farther away will be low PPF. The neon sign and building lights are going to shine into the lens at night, also, and I'd wager they bloom pretty severely and ruin a lot of the FOV for low light image quality.
If all they want to do is get generally activity? It could work. I'm all for situational awareness if you combine the panoramic with other cameras for detail, but I don't see other cameras up here.
These can be a good idea and work well. But one wack with a baseball bat and it's curtains for that particular setup. If it were me I'd either flushmount it in the entryway ceiling or use a wide-angle cam mounted much higher up.
I leared my lesson the last time you posted a picture of a fisheye.
Answer that doesn't get me personally insulted: depends on the purpose and goal.
The Armando answer: terrible usage. Whatever they were trying to do could have been done better in a different way. Especially considering they got wire to that intercom. Oh, wait, I'm making assumptions again.
After seeing the whole context, I'm going to double down on the Armando answer. :)
To me, this screams that someone said "I want to see everything and I'm not paying for technicians to be here all day"
*disclaimer - "to me" implies this is an opinion and should not be taken to mean I have ESP and can divine what actually happened when this was sold or know what the intention was. I can only offer an entertaining guess.
