The Problem With Security Systems In The Retail Segment.

Hi,

Dear friends, IPVMteam, Mr. Honovich, I will try to present my point of view of retail synergy between the Warehouse and Shopping Center. When you are watching demonstration video or presentation the company is focused on demontration of new functions and shows this functions apart or using a few cameras. I was trying to imagine an example which will help you to show this mechanism and his problems. Yes, the retail segment is one of the most complicated parts for the security industry. You can’t use the access control or some analythic modules. You don’t have such a big budget as you have when you making airport security or other huge objects. But it’s interesting. And in spite of all protective barriers, chips and other tricks it retail still remain one of the biggest problems. I have tried to elimenate a lot of the parts of the retail chain. Your team consits of 11 engineers, developers and a support manager with extensive experience working for security integrators, organizations and manufacturers. You have done the most in-depth expert reports on security technology, the most in-depth expert reports on security technology, the only independent security and video surveillance testing service providing critical analysis and education on leading products etc.

Why I am asking, because the retail is one of the biggest parts of the global economy and it’s very vulnarable. I think each of you have a lot of experience in this part of indusrty. So. Let’s imagine a imagine a new retail company and try to build the security system using three famous companies.

The retail company consists of 2 units (Warehouse and Shopping Center) let’s start building the security system using the Genetec, Milestone and Hikvision.

Warehouse and Shopping Center are almost identical parts of the company. They are almost similar in most sections. The same principal - the product arrives, checks, sorts and waits for sale / shipment. But the principals of the video surveillance differs. At the warehouse it’s a restricted area. You will have to search among your workers. On the one hand you don’t have so much people in the warehouse as if you has in the Shopping Center, but on the other you have to do a lot of investigation to gain a succes. The Comercial Center is a real headache, you have hundreds of different scenarios, it may be theft, fraud, hacking, vandalism, argument, deception, loss. And you almost the entire territory of the mall is open to buyers.

The key to a successful business is a well-established logistics and retail network working as one unique unit. The similar principle exists in security systems. You can find a lot of security companies which name their products or cooperation of two or three products and name this SYNERGY. The same cooperate work exists in the security. It is self monitoring the status of the system, access control functions, alarms and restrictions, plan manager, LPR, POSintegration, Live / Archive viewing, video wal and others.

What we should know about the objects of the company?

The Warehouse consists of

Unloading docks

Putaway .Verification and consolidation

Warehouse (10 sections)

Packaging and preparing

Kitting. Loading docks.

Place for damaged or defective goods.

Money

Our Shopping center consists of

Unloading docks

Putaway. Verification

Retail space (10 Sections)

Point of Sale

Packaging

Kitting. Loading docks.

Place for damaged or defective goods.

Money

The order of sections in the warehouse  and in the Shopping Center is the same. 10 sections and 5 groups of goods.

Next step. We need to identify our vulnerable points.

Warehouse.

Peremetr

Checkpoints

Loading dock

Unloading dock

Problem zones. ( Light Bubles, Home electronic, Set tools, Air tools and plumbing parts are our vlnerable groups of goods)

Shopping Center

Peremetr

Checkpoints

Loading docks

Unloading docks

Point of sale

Electricity accessories (one of the smallest consumables)

Light Bubles (They replace bubles , open the package and throw out the box then put into the pocket.)

Electric tools (they remove the chip and hide under the clothes, or steal parts)

Electric tools accessories (many client takes them as a gift and forget to pay) :-)

Air compressors (steal parts)

Set tools (set pieces - is the real headache, but some clients sometimes try to steal sets)

Garden tools (very attractive type of goods, especialy proffessional series)

Door tools ( locks and higes )

Bathroom (Faucet aerator)

For example this company has 29 vulnerablel zones.

Next step. Creating a plan of objects and the location of surveillance cameras

We need to create the matrix of the system.

The warehouse consists of 115 cameras

The Shopping Center consists of 128 Cameras.

Preconfigs and Live view.

All these 3 VMS have a lot of functions which can help to build very informative video wall or operator’s work place. I like that any information you want you can send to the video wall, or you can send your investigation as a report. You can set different configs, you can preconfig zoom presets. To create a new tile pattern tooks you a few time. You can choose the location of tiles number and display the information you need. When you need changes, you can always quickly rebuild the matrix.

All the systems has Search mode, Smart Search, Event Search, Seuence Search. You can area crossing detector. You can use tha plan manager. And you can defend the peremetr using the alarm triggering, and the operator can visually track the intruder as he moves across the territory or through the building or navigate him between buildings. Operator can monitor multiple entires at the same time within the map. Operator can efficently investigate by going through poayback video without leaving the map. But the real picture of this function that you can use it only in restricted areas or only when there is no working staff and customers. And using all these systems you can’t limit the acces and investigate them because between Video System and Access Controll exist synergy.

What about Shoppping Center and Warehouse Loading and Unloading docks? You have to make warehouse managment system(WMS) integration with LPR integration if you ant your operator could understand something in this sectors. And even if you have this integration the system will have to do a lot of tests to gain the synergy between information from the WMS and your VMS. ( For example There is an expenditure invoice for 1500 light bulbs and if the invoice does not indicate how many boxes in the pallet - you can’t do nothing. )

As the result. We have done using the access control checkpoints and peremetral defense. And our warehouse still have issues in it’s defense: Problem zones. ( Light Bubles, Home electronic, Set tools, Air tools and plumbing parts are our vlnerable groups of goods) In my opinion you have to use videoanalythics which will send you alarm triggers about motion detect in these problem zones.

Tracking persons in a real time and archive. Milestone and Genetec has their tracking functions which allow the operator to switch across the cameras. You can create tile patterns that will narrow down the list of cameras. But you will have to remember whcih pattern your camera is located. Also you may use the camera structure folder.

Here is the simple example of the tracking relations. But what abou corridor cameras?

There can be 9 or even 12 connections. You will be unable to use this tracking in the real-time. Yes you can follow the person using a lot of small tile or smart or video wall or different preconfigs. If Genetec and Milestone has this links and rectangles yes - Hik’s mastepiece do not have such function I have asked their expert - he told me that he don’t know about such function. So, The Shopping Center consists of 128 cameras and you have at least 556 relations between cameras, it’s true to say that you will not use some of them. But if you don’t do this link - you will spend a lot of time finding the suitable camera. And This company has 1000 links. And you can’t remember all the camera nambers to search them by keywords, it’s impossible to use the map preview - you waste moments, 10 or 5 seconds per camera.

POS integration. I can find out a lot of information about that … our company has years and years of practising in building the retail security systems. And yes, you cant find any information about any transaction you need and sort it by the time, by discount card you can do any report you want. And all this reports can imidiatly links with the video information.

And in the end of my message. I would like to Thank you for your attention. I don’t won’t to waste your time so I have tried to make it short and to pay attention on the problems. I don’t want to spoil the mood with uncomfortable questions. But, when the vender presents a new product he tries to present his product as a HUGE step in technology. For example when you are watching video about phone - they are making the synthetical tests and tell you that this phone makes this task fater in 0,005 second than the second etc.But what about Security systems? What about retail? You have to make a huge efort if you want to track the person. But it should be easy. It should be routine work. The security systems are growing and the industry is improving. Why I have used these 3 companies as an example? Yes as to logistics and warehouse the Geutebruck’s track and trace function is very very interesting, but I couldn’t find out about their POS integration. But I am going to read their G-Core guide. I like how BriefCam works. But we need all the parts of the security system.  Because they have all the parts to become make your retail object UNIQUE. But in facet we have that about reports and facts - you have synergy, it is almost ideal. But in a real time they have to work.

I don't want to say  negative words to these comapanies. Their products are very very sofisticated and I have no any right to criticize them. All that I want to explain the point of view.

Thank you very much.

The tiles/views/layouts are a remnant from the analog matrix days, and I totally agree that tracking a person through a shopping center (or basically any location) is a lot harder than it needs to be (yeah, everything is neatly organized in folders, but what damn folder has the camera I need?).

Milestone had (probably still do) have the ability to place icons on top of the video feed to let you navigate easily. E.g. if you see the person walk through a door, you can place an icon on the door, and it will navigate to the camera that is located behind it

It's been a while since I've seen that feature being pushed - so I don't know if it's still there.

POS integration can be very time-consuming because different stores have different systems, and even systems that have the same brand can have a vastly different configuration that can't easily be tapped into. As an example, I worked on a very large stores POS system and they couldn't offer splitting the printer-cable, so we had to hook into the enterprise backend. This took months of work to do, and if they ever decide to change the format of the backend (add or remove a column), we'd need to re-write the code.

Fundamentally, though, I think the problem is that most VMS' (or at least the big ones) try to be a one-size fits all (which means it doesn't really fit anyone). I'm sure there's an opportunity for a vendor that makes bespoke systems that have a certain vertical as their focus, vs. a system that will do "everything".

Mr. Morten Tor Nielsen

Yes,  I understan that POS integration can be very time-consuming. But the VMS's POS interface is very uncomfortable. Yes it was good idea to match the video information and transaction. But they have to improve design, add new functions ...   I understand that every company want to become the pioneer of new technologies and no one wants to focuse on their problems.

Sir,

Very well written and explained.  Looking at your LinkIn profile it appears you are from the construction side of the house. Can you share a little about yourself?  Also what information are you hoping to gain by your post?

DH

Mr. Biolette,

Thank you!

My name is Denis, and I am from Chisinau, Republic Moldova. I am working in the Supraten  company, since I have graduated the University on the 1th of June it will be 9 years.  This Company works in the construction industry, they have production ans retail shoppin centers. My position is called Security Engineer, but in fact I am an installer, designer, accountant, secretary and when there are not enough people I am also a security guard :-)

I think that you should share and disscuss any interesting problem. But it is actual. For example If you count the number of airports and the number of grossery stores in one city it will be 1 to 1000.  Why I have took as an example this companies - because you don't know the companies I use. And for the better understandin I had to read some manuals and watch some videos.  First I was planning to take the Bosch's product instead Hikvision, but I couldn't find any information about any information about  POS integration. But before I understood this I have read their VCA manual.  What information I am hopping to gain?  I am trying to understand why this tracking and POS functions are so complcated. For example we have Genetec Security Center and you have decided to build the system using this program. You has an excelent access control and video system synergy and you need also live tracking and LPR and POS system. It's impossible that 1 or 2 person will be able to  analyze and react to all alarms, but it is quite possible you just need to make some scripts or macros (sorry I don't remember the right name)  that 1 person could easily and quickly follow the suspicious person across the 100+ cameras and it is quite simple to optimize genetec's POS function and the one person will be able to monitor. There different ways to do this function more informative, easy to use. But they haven't done it.

And with the increasing of the number of cameras, the problems will only get worse.

Ok, I'll bite so this system does not exist so off the top of my head and with a few fresh Friday IPAs here is a beer design...and however one software company is very close(spoiler at the end).

Let's simplify the example then theoretically build to scale.

1. The example building is 50' x 50' there is only 1 loading dock door, 1 rear single door and a double sliding door at the front entrance.

2. Let's call this video verified occupancy, for now. The front entrance has a modular camera say and Axis F34 with 4 Axis F1004 bullet imagers. One for incoming and one for exiting customers. Essentially 2 cameras and 8 modular imagers.

3. Lets call these our FR enrollment cameras (facial recognition/enrollment). Now let's get to the scenario and then see what is going on with the rest of the building.

Scenario 1 Use Case: The VAMS (Video Analytic Management System) will use these 8 modular cameras to enroll every person that proceeds thru the entry point(a person enters the store). Each face is enrolled and even given a unique name(ID number) say Hugo, Danny or Sally. This enrollment recorded is logged as a metadata tag associated with each and every camera in the system. If 20 people walk in the store between 8am and 8:20am each and every person has be enrolled as a searchable object within the video database, given an ID and text friendly name along with a time date stamp.

4. Now we have entered the store and there are as many cameras as needed to capture all of the vulnerable areas/angles/views. The person is tracked every where they go and if corelated to a top down floor plan the VAMS can draw a timestamped route(think google maps) that each and every person took, how long there were in each section and other items like husband and wife, two men, a female with two kids(smart learning associations data).

5. It's not how many cameras are mounted down low for the FR views but also overview traditionally placed cameras and long distance topology views from another tier of cameras in the canopy.

6. The live result: Let's build a video wall that has a matrix of say 8 panes, within each pane a person is displayed live walking thru the facility with one view being the anticipated front view of the person and the other the overhead broad viewing camera. The 8 panes of video allow for the end user to track 4 people at one time, with an easy thumb name queue to select any person of interest. Once selected they remain on the pane until another is chosen or the person has exited the building.

7. Imaging there are 10 overhead cameras and 20 FR cameras (mounted at 6' or so) in this small building example. An associated floorplan with the VAMS, tagging each enrolled person so you now have a live and archived track and trace time/date stamped histogram along with standard video recording.

8. The Loading dock entry exit can be designed the same way as the front and incorporating exterior cameras are also part of the metadata being tagged.

9. Employees are permanently enrolled so searching, archiving and running a floor map trace(direction of travel, when and where) can be made daily, easily.

10. Forklifts can also be enrolled with a unique number visible from all sides, think of a race car number. Additionally, with 802.11ax coming out, wifi video may become a more popular robust deployment. This would allow retrofitting forklifts and temporary cameras in the facility as well.

You already know what the rest of analytics can do, so factor that in with some creativity or other use cases.

11. POS, again metadata is your friend and perhaps Adobe can assist with ACR decoding of that metadata to capture, time data stamp and archive the entire POS transaction(s).

So who is close to this VAMS? I have played around with MangoMate DSP, Briefcam, AgentVI, Axis plugins, Bosch & Sony onboard VA and even Cernium(lol) so take this with a grain of salt. A younger fresh to market Video Analytics Software company is more flexible to re-write code, adapt and implement new rules on a platform that is building so reach out to Vintra and pick their brain on what they might or might not be able to accomplish. IPVM also has a numerous analytics reviews and case studies on this site, search for them.

Last, a popular store should build a phone app that turns on once a customer is on premise and have some sort of Bluetooth tracking system enabled. The customer also receives rewards and builds points for letting the app run while on premise, perhaps even random BLUE TOOTH SPECIALS being texted to customers giving them something for free, a paint brush, water hose or some siracha sauce, napkins or even a coupon for something they have in their cart already(creepy but cool). Thank you analytics.

Beer is kicking in, have a good weekend and happy hacking your design. I'm off to play with some firewalls.

Mr. Undisclosed #2,

Thank you.

I am not an IPVM member, and I have never used these programs. I am not certeficated person. And it’s true to say that I can’t afford myself IPVM membership - it’s too expensive for me. I have read some reports and test and they have convinsed me to base my example on Genetec, Milestone and Hikvision. Here is some quotes from the articles.

IPVM also has a numerous analytics reviews and case studies on this site, search for them.

Thank you.

Genetec is well known as one of the largest and most advanced VMS systems in the market, growing from obscurity a decade ago to become a leading choice of large enterprises. The question, though, is how much has Genetec grown recently and how big is it today, especially in light of the major shifts within the VMS market over the last 2 years. In this note, we examine those numbers and positioning.

https://ipvm.com/reports/genetec-5-8

 VMS Strengths

Security Center has several strengths related to cybersecurity, feature support, and hardware support:

  • Extensive Feature Support- No major feature/option gaps in comparison to enterprise VMSes
  • Cybersecurity Advanced Features- Has advanced features specific to cybersecurity not found in VMSes
  • Dynamic Custom Dashboards- Dashboards offered flexible client views during testing with cameras, maps and charts, but required significant time for setup and fine tuning layouts.
  • Extensive Camera Support- Multiple manufacturers cameras were connected during testing, with encrypted communications and multiple streaming support supported for some. Genetec reports ~4,000 officially supported devices, and ONVIF G conformance
  • Kiwi Analytics Native- Unlike previously, no 3rd-party plugins needed to be installed for Kiwi analytics

VMS Weaknesses

Security Center has several weaknesses related to the client interface design, legacy feature support, and high software cost:

  • Complicated UX Navigation- Inconsistent workflow, visually similar icons, and complicated configuration create user experience issues
  • Event-to-Action Still Poorly Implemented- An unfiltered list of features regardless of what a camera supports makes configuration difficult and high potential for errors
  • Mapping Is Very Expensive- Mapping performed well in testing, however, the licensing is complicated and more expensive than many complete VMS packages
  • Large Installation Package, Slow Install Time- 4.4GB install file took half an hour to download, and 10-15 minutes to install. This is a much larger file and longer install than their primary competitors

This companiy has all the parts and I so warm words about it convinced me if you want to build a godd secrutity system I should chose it.

At first I looked at this problem seems normal and trivial.

So, Mr. Undisclosed #2, you have ignored my example and have changed the rules and to present yourself in the best light. Very interesting position. But let’s try to analyze it.

It’s very interesting idea. You can find any information about any customer or worker of the retail chain. You can easy follow the person using his id or make any report you want. You can find any statistic information about how often this person visit, how much time he is spending. It will cost millions of dollars but it will be ineffective. For example 50% of my “clients” wear hoodies or caps they left their cars and eneter the terriotory without it. The are trying to hide their faces and usually work in couples or in three. 30% are simple workers 15% very respectable persons, 4% drug or alcohol addicted and 0.1% - women. You can’t ude LPR and face recognition because the hide their cars and faces. And a lot of “white” customers wears caps and hoodies.

I know the RETAIL and INDUSTRIAL doctrine - you don’t. It’s very hard to convice this companies to start modernization or to change the system. They know how to count money. You may chose any system you want. The only point:  it must have some neccesary functions, and adopt to any retail company. If you need you can add any analythics you.THE system HAVE to HELP you, not waste the money.

Your system will work only if you have maniac thief and every day steals the same product. And after inventory and archive archive you can find him using face recognition. And the next day when he will apear in the Shopping Center the system will TRIGGER an ALARM! Bravo!

Mr. Undisclosed #2 Thank you for your MANIFEST, I think that now I have found how to build THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND INEFFECTIVE IN THE WORLD SECURITY SYSTEM. You have hacked my example? What? The only thing that you have managed to hack - was a can of beer. It is the bloger lvl not an experienced engineer. SORRY. Your team have done a lot of the most in-depht independent reports. And that is your arguments? Now protect your point of view. Not in front of me. In front of all the people who works in the retail security, with retail security system and manages with the same problem. What you will tell those people who has build their system and have paid millions in Genetec and Milestone? Forget Genete and change the VMS to Vintra?  Why the people are reading and watching you? Because they want to chose the best product. And they can rely on you. You are making your example using BriefCam, SONY, Boch. But we are talking about concrete companies.

My Best Regards.

Have a nice day.

Denis I am having a great day. This is just random beer thoughts using some of the worlds most expensive technology and I can agree the hardware costs are high for processing video analytics, even with Anyvision you still have to invest in multiple Tesla V100 GPU. Hardware costs will come down as the demand goes up and VA is everywhere in our near future. If you want today's best off the shelf deployments you are already on the right path, looking at concrete companies, mocking up your design and analyzing vulnerabilities and engaging in a forum where there are many experts that might elevate a perspective or increase the depth of concept. If the identification problem is people in hoodies and if a camera could speak it would say, what you see is what you get. The problem with retail is keeping the honest people honest, a person walks in to buy a hammer and walks out with $500 dollars of product in his pocket because this person sees the same vulnerability you do.

Here is a use case for you to go research: Amazon Fulfillment Centers. Hundreds of cameras, canopy and in your face, metal detectors on exit, single point of entry/exit, many employees in a million square foot facility. No cell phones, those go in your locker or stay in your car you bring it in, you lose it until it is verified. Tandem rotary turnstiles enter and exit Now is FR used? I will not confirm or deny, however there are millions of dollars of inventory at risk so take your best guess. The Fulfillment center security design does not have the losses that standard brick and mortar retail shop will have yet they do have losses. Active penetration tests, internal and external are part of rigorous field testing on a regular schedule.

Small budgets do affect security, however you need to do the best with what you have. Good luck with the what ever option you decide to go with, keep in mind that my crispy hoppy IPA allows me to travel to the future and deploy stuff without all the traditional security mindset.

I suggest you get some beer yourself, you sound like you need some.

/Cheers - UD#2 out. (PS, I wore a hoodie while I typed out this response).

Mr. Undisclosed #2,

:-) Thank you for your  advice.

Mr. Undisclosed #2,  I offer you a friendly bet. (I don't know if it's the ideal translation)

1. I will explain my point of retail doctrine.

2. I will show how to build how  the best retail secrity system.

3. In the end you will inderstand why my question about tracking is so so important.

If I win - all I need - it's to say.  "It's a good work. well done".   If I will lose ...

Try me

And Mr. Undisclosed #2,

I have read some information about Anyvision,

Thank you very much,  it was very interesting.

But what about practical use of this system? Yes you can set up these cameras as supporting colums and they will connect with the other system.  Yes it will help you in tracking person.  And theory it could be lternative to the manual searching.  And technical caracterestics are so charming :-)  But this company does not position itself in the retail segment. Why? they have

AnyVision for Safe Cities

AnyVision for Airports

AnyVision for Banks

AnyVision for Casino

AnyVision for Stadiums and Arenas

Whitelist and Perimeter Control

But what about retail? :-)

It was a good lesson for me. It's true that I haven't heard about them. I am very grateful. Thank you.

But what about BriefCam in retail?

Denis I am quite sure you have complexities in your retail segment but they are nothing like the CTF puzzles I crunch every night. I never trained to disassemble that which is design, constructed by others for me I find it quite natural to break things just to find the unconnected dots. It is one thing when you are asking for advice and another when you are challenging people. If you like to solve problems start researching google CTF or VHL CTF, thinking outside the box at least for the intrigued or ambitious can be learned. The reward is simply learned to un-puzzling a problem or set of problems, once you are able to scale and harvest the experiences of CTF you can apply that nature to any other problem, even yours.

Perhaps the technology does not exist to resolve your problem today, but it does not mean it does not exist, hence my example was just imagining a scenario, making things up. If you work with what you got and find yourself stuck take a new approach to your design, simple.

Greater challenges await, Intrigued? Go Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDYwcIf0LZw

Sir,

Excuse me. But I am giving you example about retail environment. Because I can defend my point of view. Because I can prove it. But we are talking about video surveillance in general. I have read this article.

https://ipvm.com/reports/search-important

Video surveillance system consists of:

Live view

Archive search

Analytics modules

Nobody will tell you that their product has an excellent archive search and it's useless in the real time ...

And nobody fromf the from the end users will recognize that they have spent millions dollars in the semi-working system. How do you imagine this?

:-) :-) :-)

Hi,

Hugo Steinhaus once said that "Mathematician will do it better" I suppose that he had forgotten to add ... except retail security systems. :-)

It's true to say, that it was my first time to explain the public and share my opinion about retail environment. It's true to say that I don't know how to use LinkedIn and Instagram or Facebook. :). But i like my work, even if it's not paid well. So.  Let's make a conclusion.  On the one hand everything is ok, we have agents, who can  eliminate and track the suspicious person. On the other hand you have video surveillance system. But what about small shops? Of course if you have a small army in you shop from time to time they will find bad guys. In this case the synergy between the retail staff and security staff is the key to success. Not the synergy in your security system. And  the real picture how it works usually shows inventory. Usually. But not always.

Of coursecyou may focus on the FR and other modern options... But it's retail, not testing company. :-)

Quae sunt Caesaris Caesari et quae sunt Dei Deo.

I think you don't need to waste millions if you don't have million losses even. :)

I am right and  I will continue to read and to do my examples. And I am happy that two persons have asked me to do the grossery shop and clothes retail. If someone need this examples or you have thoughts how to improve my examples. I am always ready to discuss. :-) just send me a letter on deniokenko@gmail.com

P.S. Mr. Honovich, thank you. You helped me very much. It's true to say that I was hopping that I will find the answers here.It was very interesting for me and sometimes I will find a new work and will be back and will be abble to afford this membership. Not today.

I wish you good luck and thank you very much.

"It is one thing when you are asking for advice and another when you are challenging people."

Mr. Halabudenco,

this sentence from UD2 is the key here, imo...

you are clearly passionate about what you do - and I like your moxie.

but these are Discussion Threads not Soapbox Threads.

it can be frustrating to educate people on what you purport to know - and the language barrier aint helping you any... but you have to understand that these barriers to understanding exist and try and overcome them - vs telling everyone that they are dumb cuz they dont get what you purport to get.
