While looking at aspect ratio from it's cinema roots, this video helps define how 4:3 became such a long held 'standard' (filmstock sizing), how 'filmgrain sizing' (read: resolution) drove new aspect ratios, and how television ultimately has driven 16:9 as a compromise between film standards.

Thanks for posting this. It was pretty interesting and well done. I hate mismatched monitors/resolutions/aspect ratios. The move in computer monitors from 16:10 to 16:9 as the standard irritated me as well.
