SD Cards And VMS Integration

For years now many IP cameras have had built-in SD card slots for storage. Why have more VMS companies not taken the opportunity to integrate these SD cards into edge storage for recording? I am sure this would require direct integrations with cameras. Is this something ONVIF could accomplish at some point in the future?
