What solutions has anyone used for asset/device tracking? I have a customer who wants to alarm if iPads leave a library, 2 entries into the library.
Thank you for any suggestions.

sensormatic/checkpoint?
It's a small application in an decorative/aesthetic area. Was looking for something a little more discreet.
How granular does the alarm need to be? Is the library a standalone building detached from other buildings, or does it share perimeter/entries/exits with other occupants?
It’s a fairly small room, the only exits are into a main corridor of a large building. Two doors that exit into the corridor, no other exits/entries. Single occupant building.
This sounds easy but if they drop the iPad into a foil lined backpack it won't trigger the alarm and if you hold the RFID really tight up against your body then odds are it won't trigger the alarm either. Best bet would be some type of bluetooth trigger.
Also, is 'Find My iPhone' protection enabled on them?
I don’t know if “find my iPhone” is enabled but I could find out. I’m familiar with the basic application on of “find my iPhone”, is there some type of advanced feature that can be used?
"Find My iPhone" will not alarm when a device leaves a defied area. It will allow the owner (the library) to remotely disable and track the location of the device if stolen.
You can lock it out so it cannot be used, and it will report it's location via WiFi or cell if equipped. There are options to make the device sound an alarm if you loose it somewhere in the building to help track it down.
It is free/comes from Apple, which is why it should be enabled already if not.
For a geofence alarm tag, an external token or dongle will be needed, like the Testing GPS Tag (Tile). Tags like Tile are getting smaller, but often are range limited to BLE distances (not WiFi or Cell) and can be physically removed from where ever they are glued on the housing.
Assuming the iPads are property of the library, and if so, are they confined to a desk or counter? Are they to be used by patrons? Or just library employees? Maybe start with a locking bracket such as the one in the following link:

An alarm device can be hardwired or wireless, affixed to the iPad and bracket, and can trigger should someone separate the iPad from the locking bracket.
Check out the iPads on display at an Apple Store and you might get an idea of what to do if they are library property which can be used by the public.
Thank You for the input. They have said that they didn't want to bolt or attach the iPad to desktops for some reason, to me this is pretty pleasing, aesthetically, and I may end up recommending this. Thank You.
I have not tested this in a security manner, but my home automation accepts IFTTT rules, so when my "home" senses I've returned (wifi and bluetooth) it turns on my lights, lowers thermostat, etc. When I leave, it sends me a message, to remind me the basics (iron/stove/etc off) and adjust thermostat, lights, etc. I'm sure theres a way to create a rule via http notification on a higher end intrusion system...maybe DMP or other (full disclosure, I am a rep, but not for DMP).
We have Elpas at a hospital location for tracking patients. They also have some kind of asset tracking system that we have looked at for the same facility. They want to track laptops. Not sure if that helps but its what I have seen.
We have a a few hospitals that use systems for patient tracking, asset tracking, and location services, but that's a large application and this is very small. I looked into some of the hospital products but didn't think that it fit the application. That was my first thought though.
I use location alerts in iOS Reminders set for "when I leave", then tie them to IFTTT to receive alerts when certain devices leave my home.
Is leaving an ID (of some sort) in exchange for the iPad out of the question?
