Today, there was a Business Insider article about the latest in the China Communist Party's dystopian tactics: China has started ranking citizens with a creepy 'social credit' system — here's what you can do wrong, and the embarrassing, demeaning ways they can punish you

A redditor commented on that topic linking to IPVM's Hikvision OEM directory on a highly read thread there, sending 6,000+ visitors to IPVM today. The problem is he made a few factual mistakes:

The Chinese government owns over half of Shenzhen Brosensing Technology Company LTD.

In the United States, Shenzhen Brosensing Technology Company LTD is known as a company called Hikvision. One of the largest camera distributors in the United States.

Obviously, Hikvision is the "Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. Ltd.", not Shenzhen Brosensing and the Chinese government is the controlling shareholder with 42% and they are not a US distributor.

Also, he says:

Any Hikvision manufactured camera connected to a network can be deactivated, activated, reset, or even locked out by Hikvision

I am not sure what he means here but the Hikvision security codes are the closest thing to that.

If anyone knows how to contact Redditors or that specific Redditor, please do.

This gets stranger. Evidently, the Redditor who posted that comment later claims to work for Hikvision partner / OEM LTS:

Surely, Hikvision is not thrilled at this...

Also, the redditor mentions "Shenzhen Brosensing" but I think he means "Shenzhen Brovision" which is LTS' real name in China. I am still though confused if he is implying that Brovision is owned by Hikvision or...

If Brovision is not owned by Hikvision, then they are at least affiliated in some manner...

Brovision / LTS is definitely an OEM of Hikvision. The question is if there is any more of a relationship, i.e., does Hikvision have any ownership in Brovision, etc.

You contact Redditors by replying to their comments or sending them a direct message. Do you have a Reddit account? It's one of my favorite time-sucks.

I saw this on r/bestof, where Redditors highlight the best comments of the day for greater visibility. Some of the comments were hilariously wrong.

Ari, if you could comment or direct message on Reddit with a link to this, that would be great. I am not that familiar with Reddit.

Again, don't expose your IoT devices to Internet. Your minimum setup is: firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS. Of course, we're not talking about residential market, where people just want to be able to setup the system in two clicks without paying professionals
