Anyone ever had a need to powder coat maglocks? what was your experience? And what did it run you?

I have a spec that that I'm working on that requires that the mag locks and accessories installed match the door hardware. (Which are brass)

I'd expect you'd need to disassemble the maglock before powder coating the enclosure, and even if possible would likely void the warranty.

I’ll make sure to make the voided warranty clear to the customer before moving forward, but I don’t think that’ll be an issue.

I spoke to a shop that was willing to do it for me, they said that they would dismantle it before treating it.

I was just curious if anyone else has done something similar and want to hear how it worked out.

My collague Ethan pointed out that some maglock brands (ie: Securitron, Alarm Control) offer dress covers for certain models of maglocks, ie:

That may be an option too.

Thanks Brian, Thanks Ethan,

That’s a good lead. I did some digging on what you referred to and see that they only make those dress covers for the maglock itself. My application calls for U brackets and Z brackets too. That’s makes things a bit more complicating.

For the brackets, can those be painted?

Those brackets aren't typically moving or contacted surfaces, so primed/painted metallic brackets might hold up nicely:

Brian, While a good idea in theory, I'm not looking to take a chance with this customer. If it was my own office then...I might have tried that.

I’m not sure about the brackets, but powder coating the armature plate is definitely a bad idea.

Never heard of powder coating mag locks, but can you use self-adhesive laminate? We use this stuff on occasion for Forced Entry Ballistic Resistant (FEBR) doors etc to give the appearance of wood on historically significant sites etc. I'm sure you can find some to match what you are looking for.

Get locking devices added to the door hardware spec or get the door hardware supplier to include in his scope

Good point Mike. Pass the buck if at all possible on this one, unless of course U1 is the door hardware provider. Seems like a no win for this. Sure you can get these powder coated, painted, stickered or whatever but what about when it starts coming off.

Those look good. Never heard of the brand but appears to be an OEM of Rutherford, or whoever makes Rutherford now. I just looked and it's Dorma. I am just trying to figure out which brand of maglocks that could be taken completely apart to powder coat. I have been dealing mainly with Securitron for the past 15 years and theirs are sealed up and the cover is epoxied on.

Also have you called the manufacturer of the maglocks in question. They might be able to do this for you?
