The scenario you have described has been tested using an Ubiquiti AC Lite access point and three different models of the PointSource.  Every time, the POE port powered on the access point regardless if anything was connected to the Data port.  Would you please contact our support team by calling our support phone number, 1-800-679-1590 Ext. 2 or by emailing support@veracityusa.com, so we can assist in troubleshooting your PointSource.  It would also help if you could supply the make and model of end device you are trying to power with the PointSource so we can review it's specifications.

Thanks for the reply. I had talked to tech support about the issue. The reason I was given that it was designed that was was "it's not intended to be a battery backup for cameras". The model I was using was the VAD-PS.

I think one of our techs however may have gotten the newer VAD-PSP models. Do you know if that operates the same way? I will check if I can get my hands on it and give it a try. It would have to work for wireless bridges and cameras. The wireless bridge was just one example. Another is testing motion based recording to a camera's SD card at a remote location. Setup the camera, leave it running for awhile (meaning we don't want to leave the laptop behind connected while we're gone), come back and check the results.

The Veracity PointSource, regardless if it an original model or newer Plus, will allow you to power the camera with for a certain amount of time depending on the power consumption of the camera.  The PointSource Plus is rated for upto 6 hours at 5 watts and time will decrease according to how much power the camera will require.  This factor will need to be taken into consideration when setting up your test site.

In my testing yesterday, the access point and camera powered on and operated without anything plugged into the PointSource's data port.  If you are still having issues, please contact us to help troubleshoot your setup and be ready to provide the make and model of the equipment being used.  Our support team is ready and willing to assist with your setup.

I've used the VAD-PS (old pointsource battery pack, no wifi) without anything plugged into the data port. The application was for a temp camera, it was powering a veracity camswitch, camera, and a ubiquiti device and lasted maybe 2-3 hours, so the 6 hours/5 watts seems accurate to me since it was probably 12-15 watts we were drawing.

We have also used the AXIS battery pack with wifi, which is pretty similar if not the same as the VAD-PSP - should also work without anything on the data port since it's meant to work over wifi.

Thanks, Sam, good to know. Maybe it is an issue with our battery pack. But I do want to reiterate that I did talk to Veracity tech support before posting here and they did tell me that it was by design it worked that way. So I don't know why he would have said that, that is something for Veracity to figure out.

One of our tech does have the newer VAD-PSP models so I'll be testing that when it is here.

I was given an Everfocus ESK1000, it provides POE, Wireless Access to LAN and or IP Camera, DHCP server and Smartphone apps

Axis has a really nice POE battery back.

I use a POE Powerbank from Idea4tec. They have 3 flavours, 12v passive POE with USB power support, 24v passive POE and a 48V 802.3af complaint Powerbank.

I use it mainly for powering up Wireless Access Points during site surveys, but it's just given me a thought for a backup to convert camera that needs to be installed for a client that was sabotaged during a power failure in his road.

 The newer Pointsouce Plus seems to work just fine like everyone said, but got some other great suggestions here, too. Thanks everyone for pitching in with suggestions.

Not sure what was up with the older model we had. And maybe the Veracity tech support person was confused and thought we were trying to use a Pinpoint, too. I don't know.
