OpenEye's CEO humbelbrags:

People keep asking me how I manage to stay in shape while working long weeks and regularly indulging my sweet tooth.

His answer:

He explains:

The secret is simple, I walk while I work! @OpenEye purchased its first walking desk for me 3 years ago. I now average 7-8 miles a day while working with no loss in productivity. Standing desks have been a staple at @OpenEye for some time, but the company now has 5 walking workstations. Four of these are for shared use and are located throughout the building. The last walking desk is in my office and it is hard to pull me away from it!

What do you think? Walking desks are certainly a trend. 'Sitting is the new smoking', etc. Are walking desks for you?

Love the idea but how do you type?

Unless most of my work involved talking without actually needing to type or read much, I don't see how I could be productive while using these.

When we are involved in a conversation where a computer isn't needed, we have wireless headsets which allow you to walk and talk without the expense of a treadmill.

That said - I love it when employers encourage good health and flexible working environments. Good on them for making standing desks a standard and giving the better-coordinated folks an option to use walking desks too.

I think this is a great idea if you could get used to typing while walking.

Would get me off my butt, and I need it!

I use one myself and have found it great for certain types of work. Excel, email and word are easy to perform on it. Typing is not as hard as you would think, when you are walking at a slow clip, mouse control is the harder one.

Tried a standing desk and had a hard time using it due to discomfort standing in place for extended periods, the treadmill worked way better for me. It also helped with my focus on tedious tasks.

I promise I do not work for a treadmill manufacturer :-)

I don’t need another reason not to want to work ;)

I would bet practically it does not work. Would be cool if it does.
Maybe it works long enough, so you can make a couple of photos...
I could be wrong.

I'd hate to see how many cad drawings would get sent back for looking like a trapezoid instead of a square

I think you would need to try it before being negative about the idea. The key is verging positions according to my doctor. A few years ago sit-stand desks were boo-hooed, now they are common place in most offices.

I am sure the reclining desk above was ment to be a joke, but I would imagine they would be benificial to persons with back problems or are paralyzed.

I've had a sit stand desk for over 10 years at my house, they are nice, I liked using them when holding my kids, but I'd have no chance with a real attempt for 3d drawings or gaming. That is just me for dexterity, I've seen plenty do those task successfully.

Just a couple of comments on the replies above.  It did take a couple of days for my eyes to adjust to the motion of walking and typing.  Once they did, I was able to type and read at a regular pace.  I’m not going to lie, you will usually find me walking/working in shorts and comfortable shoes from 7am – 10am at 2.2 MPH.  I am lucky to have a shower at the office so I change into business attire mid-morning.  After that I rotate between meetings/calls, my regular desk, and the treadmill workstation.  Once I’m dressed I walk at 1.5 MPH to avoid breaking a sweat.  When I first started I only used the treadmill 30 minutes a day but over time it became easier to concentrate and my back felt much better while moving.  I don’t think it is for everyone but if you have any back issues and spend a lot of time in Outlook, Excel, etc it might be helpful.  Thanks.

He's not even bragging as much as he could. I remember him walking with a pack with weight so he could get used to it. He was prepping for a hike. Rick is legit.
