ONVIF Discovery / Management Tool: What Features To Include?

We are considering creating an IPVM camera management / discovery tool and debating what features to include. Some options may not be available on all cameras, due to manufacturer or profile. The full list of features supported by each profile is here.

Some thoughts are to:

  • Make it a vendor-agnostic discovery tool, with options to perform basic tasks like network configuration, user management, time, etc.. but it may also be possible to perform codec configuration and image quality settings.
  • More complex configurations may be somewhat confusing for users, though, as the scales these use via ONVIF will likely vary from what camera web interfaces use.
  • Take a series of snapshots for comparison purposes (either all using similar settings or changing settings prior to each shot).

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

Note: The open source tool ONVIF Device Manager is available, but has not been updated since 2016. Additionally, some features, especially in user and streaming profile management, do not work reliably.
