ONVIF has released a challenge to have people develop open source apps and programs for mobile, pc, or web that access various manufacturer devices

Developers can receive prizes and rewards with the top prize of $20,000.

Do you think this will lead to innovative new apps and ideas or standalone apps that don't do anything  Or will the big boys just take these features and roll them into their own software as open source free features that don't cost anything for development

Nest idea that I applaud in trying to stimulate ideas and maybe getting young people interested. New and free apps is always a great idea.

Maybe.  Hard to tell if it'll fit in a given VMS ecosystem.  If your VMS vendor horks the camera config at will and requires scanky admin creds on the camera then interacting with the camera (via OnVIF or otherwise) can be challenging.  If your VMS vendor is a rockstar and manages the cameras well then why do you need more OnVIF tools.

A true open source and non-Russian OnVIF tool would be nice, I must say...
