Off Topic: Does Your Office Limit You To 4 Beers A Day?

At first, I thought this was a joke or an Onion article but it evidently it's legit:

Unsurprisingly, the unlimited beer policy had drawbacks:

a lawsuit from a former employee challenged the company's corporate culture and shed light on its alcohol consumption, noting its "free beer on tap all day in all offices policy." The former employee, who claims she was sexually assaulted at two company events and ultimately fired in retaliation for reporting the incidents, alleged that "in both instances, the male employee professed to be too drunk to remember the incident," according to the complaint.

What policies do companies have for drinking at work? I can recall maybe bringing in beers occasionally at the end of the day but never anyone just drinking beer during the day as if it was coffee or water...

After four beers, I’ve stopped counting...

I sure hope not...

As a related note, the last integrator I worked for had a policy in the handbook stating alcohol could not be expensed for any work events, customer lunches/dinners, any reason at all. This policy was not strictly enforced for customer entertainment, but for larger company-wide events or employee appreciation events, there was never any alcohol.

Also regarding WeWork: Unlimited Beers is ok, but meat, not okay.

I remember when I first started as a tech (ten years or so ago, give or take) a bunch of the other techs at the company I worked for were already 20 year vets in the industry. Christmas rolls around, and one of them start complaining about how the company, which used to be family owned but was sold to a telecom company, used to "give us beer and pizza for lunch and then send us back out to work!". All said in a tone that implied he missed it, and the corporate owners were now ruining the company by not letting us all guzzle a few beers and head back out for more service calls.

I used to have a technician working for me who was a master troubleshooter but absolutely could not function without smoking a blunt at lunch. As in, he once tried to quit and then could not manage to diagnose or repair simple issues. I didn't say anything, but was mighty relieved when he started smoking weed again two weeks later.

This is fifteen years ago. I shudder to think what kind of liability I assumed...

IMHO, tech support departments often run on the stuff.  Back in the day they did their stoner best to hide it, which wasn’t in reality much.

They would ask each other things like “So, did you perform that factory reset yet?” while barely suppressing a giggle.

Whoa. Maybe you have to get to stoner-status to function while high? Because if I smoke anything, it's nap time. But I might only do so a couple times a year.

Office alcohol was a staple in the startup world. I worked for multiple companies that all had dedicated beer fridges, and accounts at the local liquor store so designated employees could re-stock the beer fridge. In some cases employees also had a personal stash, my office had a mini fridge and some liquor bottles on the bookshelf, this was not uncommon.

The general unspoken rule was you could have a beer or 3 after 5PM Monday to Thursday and after 3PM on Fridays. Usually on Fridays everyone would gather for at least one beer together.

In the real boom days (pre 2008-ish), Friday afternoons had kegs and catered snacks or BBQ, even at publicly traded companies

Any company outing (a lunch, holiday party, etc.) it was expected that employees would have a few drinks.

I don't ever recall there being any issues with excessive drinking in the office. There typically were no under age employees, or overly immature employees that would trade a good 6-figure job for over consuming.

This is appalling and simply outrageous!! WeWork should be ashamed. Our policy is no more than 4 beers before Noon. On another note, Uber really needs a fleet Work Vans.

My last manufacturing job in SF there was Kegerator in the break room.  Biggest controversy was who was getting the first pint of the day and what time was it.  Even bigger was what to kind of beer to get, got to keep it simple so all can enjoy the libations.

Never had any issues with someone overdoing it infact the presence of the keg sort of I think made it less appealing to drink at work, who the hell wants to hang around the office and drink and pound code out?   That was obviously the idea of the perk, while free beer is the best beer I rarely grabbed a pint and went back to my desk to work more.  We hung out and played pinball, foosball and ping pong, nothing like rubbing elbows with the C-Suite Team Building w/beer.  Moral was great at times, beer helps nerds socialize and come out of from behind their keyboards.

Grandma always said its 5 o'clock somewhere, pour me a drink boy!

Zero tolerance here. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol tests and if involved in an accident on company time, mandatory testing.

When you sell Hikvision, you drink Scotch, not beer.

Officially - no alcohol at work or lunch.  Unofficially, I sit next to someone who often comes back from lunch smelling like a brewery and mentions beer every half hour.  However, that is the sole exception.

Company outings are a different matter. I have had to Uber home on more than one occasion.  I have never worked at an employer where the company outings were anything but an Oktoberfest.

Was more of an issue when we were sharing a wall with a brewery. It was fridays only after 2pm and a 2 beer limit. My biggest concern revolved around company vehicles.

I had lunch with a friend who works in fintech yesterday. The lunch kind of got out of hand, and we both overdid it a little. As we were parting, he told me he was going to take a nap.

I thought he was kidding, until he explained that his office has a nap room for the employees. "I can work half-assed until 5, or I can take a 45 minute nap and then work full assed" was how he put it.

And then I went back to work the crowd at ISC East.

I remember in the 1970s in NYC it was traditional to go on Fridays to lunch at an Irish bar and then return to work.  I must confess, I was mostly useless for the rest of the work day.

Not to mention green beer on St. Pattie's day.

No office anymore. My department had a zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol for all its employees. In fact, we weren't even allowed to drink after hours at a bar or in a restaurant on the property. We also weren't allowed to gamble on or off duty.

So of course, a couple of days after I retired, I found myself sitting at one of their bars, playing a bar top slot. LOL

Actually, I have a new picture of me in a tux with a drill that is clearer but I'm too lazy to bother editing it into the gun barrel picture. Perhaps someday.

My office does limit me to four beers per day but I can go to the next office over and have another four.
