Milestone Xprotect Live Database

Milestone Xprotect server calculator always recommend 15K HDDs with RAID 10 for Live database of big systems as 15K provides high performance due to high IOPS. My question is what about SSD, instead of using like 8 HDDs i can use just 2 SSD which will give me  higher IOPS than the eight 15K HDDs so please correct me if I am wrong.

Also I have another question as Milestone recommend SQL Server Standard or Enterprise for systems over than 300 cameras, is it really necessary when I will not use clustering and I see that their Husky NVRs that support 500 and 700 cameras have SQL Express.

Mostafa,

SSD's have the speed required and probably work fine ... assuming they can withstand the read/writes as they are a consumable resource. Standard spinning disks provide a better value in term of wear-ability and cost/life.

Milestone ALWAYS recommends RAID 10 live-drives because you are leaving the "Storage Information" section of the calculator on the defaults which will provide the "safest" specifications.

On page 2 of the server calculator look for the Storage Information section and click on the "Advanced" button.

This will open up additional options. Open the first one labeled "Array" and you will see various RAID and JBOD options for the video storage disks.

Switching to JBOD will give you a more minimal requirement for the live-drives.

Here is an example of two Server Specifications for the exact same number of cameras, etc .. with the only difference being I used Auto-Select on the first, and JBOD on the second.

I am familiar with the auto selection option and for me RAID 10 is OK and safer as it gives higher performance with a fault tolerance, I just want to consider working with SSD in the future as I have a project that Milestone recommends eight 300GB 15K HDDs with RAID 10 and I want to be sure that two 1.2 TB SDDs with RAID 1 will give me better perfomrance.
