#1, we have exchanged emails in the past with them. Last month, they publicly launched. We did not respond to them at that time but your discussion reminded us. We've reached back out to them to discuss more for a post.
What is on their (Verkada) website is fairly basic / limited, a cloud VMS with their own cameras.
By EEN, I presume you mean Eagle Eye Networks. There are definitely some similarities, once we learn more we will offer an opinion.
looks like they have meraki in their blood -- wonder if it's actually the same solution.
Their Chairman Hans Robertson was a Merakai co-founder.
I do not believe Veraka's solution is related to Meraki though surely they learned things from Meraki's experience. Again, we will post an article after we talk with them and review.
They just to did a short presentation for us, looks promising. Any of you PROS have insight/opinions.
Newell, we did a post a few months back, see: Verkada, Silicon Valley VSaaS Startup, Targets Enterprise. They told us they were doing an end to end system only supporting their own cameras. Is that what they said to you? I ask because I am wondering what you would do with your existing cameras?
Hi John,
If we were to use their system it would be for new/newly remodeled stores. We would not be replacing any of our existing systems that are still working fine.
Sounds good.
My general advice for startups / newer providers is to carefully check what features they do or do not support. The reason being is that often one takes for granted certain features but the startup / newer provider has not gotten around to them.
Btw, Newell, what was the most interesting or attractive part of their presentation to you? Curious to hear what stood out.
John,
The presentation was brief, but some of the things I thought were interesting in a positive way.
1. No server - video storage is done in each camera
2. We struggle with bandwidth. Video streaming looked good (pulling video from our stores server has been an issue for us for a long time)
Newell, I do recall the bandwidth issue :) Did you test or did they demo a camera at one of your sites? I am curious how it performed / what it did.
Ok, thanks. Typically, cloud systems have issues with bandwidth limitations. However, it depends how they manage bandwidth / streaming. For example, if stream the video to the cloud for recording during off hours, it could make for very fast retrieval at a later date. But if they need to pull it from the local site through the cloud on demand, it could be much slower and higher latency. That noted, not sure of Verkada's approach. I'll ask them for clarification.
Has anyone received anymore information that was stated above? Local school received a demo and is all googly-eyed.
We did a profile on Verkada after this discussion: Verkada, Silicon Valley VSaaS Startup, Targets Enterprise and a follow up Rare Video Surveillance Fundraising - Verkada $15 Million
