Looking For A Means To Detect Emergency Vehicle Sirens

I have a client with a large facility protected by access controlled motorized gates. They are looking for a means to allow emergency vehicles to be able to automatically open the gate when attending the premises on an emergency. Years ago I remember seeing some sort of audio detection device connected to a gate operator but recent searches have not turned up anything.

Has anyone used such a device or know where I could find one?

Doing some cursory research...

https://www.audioanalytic.com

Probably get better results if you were more specific about what technology you are integrating with.

Not sure if there is a ready made appliance but what you can do is find some type of IP device that has the ability to recognize sirens and you will probably end up with some sort API or way to output to your VMS. Say for instance Network Optix. Theoretically you would set the listening device to send an http request to the NX Server to trigger another action such as open gate.

I would be interested to see what kind of solutions others find.

I would be fine with a good old relay output or voltage trigger. No fancy integration required.

You could use this to likely detect decibel levels and trigger an output relay above say 100 or 105 db would have to see the software in order to see what can be defined for a trigger output. Then again this will open to anyone who can breach the decibel range but will likely be the easiest setup as long as you keep this aspect hidden doubt anyone would try and open a gate with really loud noises when they are not wanted there.

>If a civilian driver requires 75 decibels of siren noise to react, the siren must arrive outside the driver's window at approximately 110 decibels, assuming an average insertion loss of 35 dB.

Hi, Louroe guy here.

Matthew beat me to a reply but this is spot on.  You could use either dB level threshold or a car alarm analytic that is activated by the repetitive sound of the siren.  Either one will trigger a contact closure on the device that could be used to open the gate.

You are probably looking for something like this https://sosgate.com/ we quoted that manufacture on a project but have not installed it yet.

I'm sure there are similar manufactures out there as well.

There are solutions that can activate on siren, strobe or ems/first responder radios.  Might be a good idea to ask the fire department if they have a preference.  A quick Google search pulled up this page that has examples of each type of solution.

Does the customer have their own security group with a vehicle patrol?  If so we have found the best way to get response and get emergency services to the right spot is to have our vehicle patrol meet them at the gate.  Once they are contacted vehicle is dispatched to the gate to give them entrance and lead them to the location of the incident.  It is not a fancy or technology dependent solution but as a large complex with 9 buildings and over 3000 employees it was the best option for us.

Check this: Universal Gate Access Solution

(click picture below for demo site)

Click2Enter uses the public safety-restricted RF band to trigger the opener, so the cruiser or truck clicks the radio mic two times to trigger an opening.

I would ask the local authorities. Here we use a lot of Knox Boxes for apartment communities. Sometimes their key opens the gate, sometimes it opens a box with an access card.

I would really talk to your local authorities and see what they want/require.

Emergency Vehicle Light Control

Traffic Signal Preemption detectors is what you are looking for, but as others have said there is a standard for the local authorities.  Could just be a Knox Box.

We've installed a number of these in the past and have found the 3M Opti-Comm and Tomar StrobeSwitch to be very reliable.  The triggering distance can be adjusted from several blocks away to less than 50 feet.  Access to the vehicle installed emitters is restricted to emergency agencies although if using the "older" system type, some clone devices have been built.

We do a large amount of gates and the different depts require different means. We mainly use the following:

home - Siren-Operated Sensors

Emergency Key Box - Knox Rapid Access System
