Linksys Router And Dyndns IP Address

We are trying to use a Linksys WRT54 (yes I know old model) behind a Comcast router. When we set up DynDNS in the linksys router, we put in the host, password etc, and when we update it says successful.

But the Linksys router is reporting the address the comcast router gave it (or the static IP we assigned), an internal IP address. Is there anyway to get this to report the public IP address?

If I go to DynDNS account from a PC on that network, and update IP, it pulls the public IP address and all remote access works fine. We just have not had any up long enough to see if the IP address changes and we loose remote access.

EDIT so it seems there is no way this is going to work unless we bridge the Comcast router, which makes things a lot more complicated. The Comcast router manages the office network.

Is there a better way to do this? We prefer to use DynDNS so we have the domain name, etc but do we just need to go to P2P? ugh

Are you using routing functions on the Comcast router?  Is it an all in one modem / router / phone? Maybe the problem is with double NAT.  I would either see if thier device meets your needs, or call them dumb down their box to just work as a modem.  They will be able to disable all routing services.

EDIT your edit was added as I posted above...my advice will not work if the office is dependent upon the routing functions of the comcast router.

Have you tried inputting the dyndns settings in your DVR/NVR instead?

I have not and maybe that will work.

I will try that and post the results.

I tried it last night and it seemed to work. As soon as I hit refresh on the NVR and looked on my DYnDNS account, my public IP was recorded.

This was behind a comcast router and a linksys router FYI.

Thanks, so simple.

Have you tried supplementing the WRT54 with a router of your own? One that you have already mastered? This will help you look both ways.

The WRT54 is our router. We thought it could handle this DynDNS issue and that it is why we use it.

I know its old but not sure if there is really a reason to look at something new. None of our clients want VPN
