For full disclosure, I've taken the Access Control class from IPVM and it was very beneficial. My org is looking to take over starting early next year all the PACS that has been typically outsourced to centrally manage it from proposals for installs to software side. I get the software side and the general ebb and flow of designing the physical side of PACS, working with AHJ/fire marshall, etc. Designing the physical sides of things wasn't really what was advertised at the time but it's been rolled into the job since. I've familiarity with all components, wiring them up, drawing schematics, and implementing solid plans for new construction, etc.
What I'm not familiar with is telling contractors what I want in retrofit situations, and even with remote meetings and pictures and floor plans it is hard to collaborate directly with the installers on coming up with a good plan. They're solid and the shortcoming is me understanding what I want and what will or won't work and communicating that to them. Things like can these double doors accommodate a mullion and strike setup or do they not have enough space? Will this power supply be sufficient to handle inrush concerns for an electrified crashbar? If I have to use a vertical rod or cable solution, how can I tell if the door will accommodate a retrofit and how can I be sure I know what all I'd need to spec out or order for the solution to work? Or for that matter, knowing when a door looks to be too worn down to work on and just rolling a door replacement into it?
