Seems John Honovich loses again this year.

Security Magazine: The Most Influential People in Security 2018

Oh well. I always had a thing for underdogs, so I think I'll stick around some more.

Lol yet the Sheriff of Morris county in New Jersey is more influential to our industry somehow?!?

You know, I was actually going to mention that in the original post but I forgot that part.

I can just see John coming home to the Honovich compound inside a dormant Hawaiian volcano, after a long hard day at work. He flops down onto the tiger skin couch, pours a martini into the skull of a vanquished enemy, and sighs.

"Man," he says to himself, "I sure wish I was as influential as the Sheriff of Morris County, New Jersey. I guess I'll just have to settle for convincing the United States government into banning two major brands and sanctioning their top executives."

Just then, a phone rings. John picks up the jewel-encrusted receiver.

"Greetings, sire. We have just received word from our agents in Florida. Tim Whall is retiring, just as you have foreseen."

"Excellent work. Write it up and post it on the site."

"Immediately, my liege."

Thought leaders only!

It is a clickbait thing meant to reward people they like, ergo you are helping them ;)

#1, you have now sent 200+ people to their click-bait list. They should send you a thank you note!

[Update: now it is up to 300+ people]

Reading through the profiles, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them "thought" that ONVIF was a camera manufacturer, or that all security vulnerabilities were equal.

This industry is rife with garbage awards handed out by organizations that couldn't tell an image sensor from a saltine cracker. It's pathetic. We are only 1 step away from some of these organizations allowing advertisers to just outright self-award these "honors".

Note: Security Magazine is end-user focused so their definition of the 'industry' is going to differ from ours or say SDM, Security Magazine's sister publication focused on the trade.

There's an idea..... IPVM should create an award and hand it to John.

The award committee must have confused the criteria for "most influential" with "most palatable".

Between this and the manufacturer product awards at ISC, the video surveillance industry really likes to congratulate / honor themselves.

All I can say is between military law enforcement and corporate security, I have been in the industry for 31 yrs now. Of all of these people on their list I have only heard of three. So not sure who they are influencing but they are not influencing me.

Serious Inquiry; does anyone read SDM or still get it delivered?

Zachary, last year, we published Security Trade Magazine Readership Statistics. SDM actually did the best out of the trades. Excerpt from that:

With ~20% of integrator respondents saying they read SDM in print and ~6% saying they read it online, SDM was the clear most common choice among trade magazines. There was not a lot of detailed explanation from integrators about why SDM, but they included:

  • "SDM. They actually have some useful info in there. Mostly I just look at the new product info to see if there's anything new and interesting."
  • "I will also read SDM mainly because I have been reading SDM since the early 80's."
  • "SDM Magazine Read for general knowledge/industry updates, ideas and solutions."
  • "SDM Magazine. Has lots of information for Integrators."
  • "SDM, because that is the only one that I know."

Important factors for SDM's selection, in our view, include that they primarily do their own long-form reporting (while many magazines republish 'thought pieces' / advertorials from manufacturers) and their strength in the alarm / intrusion side of the business.
