I have a keypad reader location that gets the brunt of direct sun here is Florida in the afternoon on and it is the only reader not mounted onto a hollow gate post like all the others. This reader had to mount directly onto the exterior building wall on top of a weather-proof single gang box. The metal keys of the keypad actually get nearly too hot to touch in the afternoon and I believe some recent issues with the reader are related to the heat.
I've been looking for some sort of sun shield but am only finding rain shields that are either clear and wouldn't block some of the sun or are black plastic and if mounted surrounding the reader with little space (width) may actually make the problem worse. I see sun shields made for cameras ans such, but non of them seem dimensionally compatible with a keypad (3.3" wide) card reader.
