How To Convert 47 .Vgz Files Into MP4

I have CD with 47 files that are in .vgz. The player from (IPLAYER) only allows conversion to .avi but they need MP4. Is there any way to automatically go from .vgz to MP4 or does each file have to be converted individually from .vgz to .avi to MP4?

.VGZ is a proprietary format, so if the player does not offer an MP4 export/conversion option you will likely need to convert to AVI, and then AVI to MP4.  The AVI to MP4 part could be automated pretty easily with ffmpeg though.

Thank You Brian! That's what I was thinking, converting to .avi then MP4 which was what the customer was hoping they could avoid.

Adding to the issue from Wiki:

VG Player for Win2000/XP is a player used to play back video recorded by the DigitalVDO recorder. The video files are compressed using Super Motion Image Compression Technology (SMICT).

The VG Player can be used to play back video, enhance the video quality, make video clips and take snapshots.

The VG Player also has an image format converter tool to convert the SMICT format to AVI format. Be careful as compression ratio is very high – 1 Mb .vgz may be over 400 Mb uncompressed.

Converting vgz files to AVI is rather pointless if you are hoping to collect video as evidence. The time code on the original video is security protected and will deliberately not appear on converted video. Otherwise converted AVI could be opened in a video editor where all sorts of tricks could be performed. The original vgz file is needed for evidence.

Thank you. Being that this is evidence video I appreciate the additional comment regarding the time code and compression issues. They want to stitch together the sequence of a situation from 6 cameras and want to do this via MP4, which they can eventually do but it will take time.

This device or similar might be the easiest way.  You can preserve evidence in the native file, but narrate and present by operating the player and capturing to this device.  I have used these for training videos.

Just insert USB, and start recording looped through the HDMI of a PC.

This might just work. The link does not work so would you mind resending it?  Thank You!
