Axis Eliminating PVC - How Important Is That? Who Else?

Axis has been promoting their sustainability efforts, concentrating in particular on eliminating PVC components from their products, and other efforts beyond standard RoHS compliance.

Is this a competitive advantage for Axis? Do any other manufacturers provide data on PVC or other potentially harmful materials in their products, or make an effort to reduce these materials?

We (Louroe) manufacture in California and surpass California environmental requirements. We'll provide materials for RoHS or other compliance as needed.  Other than meeting a product spec for compliance with RoHS or other standards I haven't seen buying criteria be set by sustainability purposes.

I really did not know this was a "thing". As an end user, I honestly could care less.  I am more interested in a product that will last in my harsh indoor environment.  Cameras take a severe beating in casinos, due to the never ending cigarette smoke.

I'm not sure any of my customers would seriously consider a camera company's environmental impact.

How many other brands have statements about materials such as PVC, conflict minerals and the recyclability of their products? If AXIS can be more responsible without affecting the durability or cost of their products than more power to them.

If you have not seen Greenpeace's annual reports on the IT industry they are worth a read. While I am in no way a Greenpeace advocate these reports seem to be well done at face value.

I used to be in the office equipment business, primarily printers and supplies.

We used to rebuild our own toner cartridges, and let me tell you, not many customers cared if the cartridges were environmentally friendly, supported USA jobs (versus China), etc. It was all about price. That was an industry that was based on being eco friendly and cheaper than OEM. And it was tough.

Unless the client has a well known or established green policy, I doubt many they will care.

I have been involved in some responses to RFP for large corporations here in the US.  Many of them asked about and/or required sustainability info, and wanted documentation on green initiates, conflict minerals, recycled content for packaging, and supply chain info.  This is in addition to local requirements such as RoHS, China RoHS, etc.

#3, thanks, helpful! Did those RFPs make any of that a requirement, i.e., could any responses be disqualified for not being 'green' enough?

I believe some elements were recommended vs required, but would result in a lower score. Other items, like conflict minerals free or RoHS and other local directives were required.  The tough part was obtaining the necessary paperwork for each of them.  Our website did have a green/eco section that listed our policies to conform, but we needed documentation.

When working with a global corp, there are so many local directives to comply with that a stateside person may not be as familiar with...

Great Idea , as some of the other company high end brands should concentrate on the quality of the product. Ecstatic's , Durability

I see faded, tarnished , UV sun burned products out there. and they don't take the direct uv of the sun very well , they always look older than they are.

Bosch started with the cheaper ingredients and since then the motions, devices don't last or hold up to client abuse and the screws that  strip when tightening (gorilla Installers).
