I've had a lot of good talkers, resumes look great, interview is great, but they end up sucking. I've gone to a new method of interviewing a salesman. You think you can sell, PROVE IT!

I'll give them a couple pieces of junk like an old Vicon 12" Dome housing bubble a 14" Pelco CRT Monitor, A bunch of cassette auto tapes... If they come back with money in their pocket and tell me how they created a value proposition on what most would consider garbage, interview is basically over. I do similar interviews with other types of jobs within my company. I've had several people timid and most honestly fail. It's been amazing to see the difference in quality and performance of my staff.

I'm curious for those that own companies or manage sales guys, how did you find your best?

Also, I'm selling this hat that could save your life, yet still lets you show off your new hair cut.

Maybe I am taking you too seriously, but it sounds like you are looking for the stereorypical used car salesman who doesn't care about providing value to his customers.

I found my best sales person the day I was born, I just didn't know it at the time...

I have had the same experience in another industry, hired people, waited months for an ROI, and nothing. Uggh flashbacks are killing me..

What happens when your competitor comes in behind your ace salesman and educates the customer on how they were just taken to the cleaners by buying that outdated worthless junk?!?!  I think you're just joking around on a slow Friday afternoon and wanted to get that picture of yourself in that camera dome posted somewhere!

I would suggest asking the prospect how he/she would go about building new business as well as how they would plan to grow your business within your current customer base.  If enough sensible and logical discussion doesn't come out of those two questions to satisfy your fancy, then no need going to the next step.
