How Did Dahua Get So MANY H.265 Supported Devices On Milestone? They Have A 3rd For Just Them.

I was straying away from a desire for milestone... but when I see this?? MAN it's hard not to just get rid of everything and go all in on Dahua. This is an AMAZING level of support from an inexpensive series... and uh... hello -- did the micro 4/3rds sensor sneak on to the scene or WHAT??

This thing looks like it's going to be nothing short of specTACular. PLEASE let it have a bad ass SoC to boot! :)

Why are you so dead set on H.265?

TH
Truman HW
Jan 05, 2018

Why..... would I want something that offers about 200 - 300% greater efficiency per minute recorded? Because that feature alone will dictate how deep my storage can be per budget of hard drives... or per backup of the 128GB SD card.

What makes you think this feature most manufactures are racing head first to offer is passé ?

H.264 smart codecs have much more impact on bitrate than non-smart H.265. You're likely looking at about 20-30% lower bandwidth if you're comparing straight H.265 to H.264, tops. That's what we're seeing across multiple manufacturers.

By contrast, an H.264 smart codec will likely cut your bitrate by 30-50% in most scenes, and as much as 90%+ in low activity scenes.

Yes, you can use an H.265 smart codec to eke out slightly more, but switching from H.264 to 5 has significant drawbacks:

  • H.265 is more intensive to decode. In some cases more than double the CPU load in our tests. That's going to have massive impact on client specs and could require hardware HEVC decoding in a lot of cases where H.264 is decoded on the CPU just fine (this is an actual issue with one of our machines, for example).
  • ONVIF support is sort of in limbo right now. Yes, you can stream H.265 via ONVIF since last year, but most VMSes don't support it and it essentially requires testing to confirm it works. This should be remedied when Profile T is adopted, but it's going to be late 2018 or into 2019 when we see Profile T cameras/VMS become common. Until then, VMSes are essentially doing direct integration for all H.265 cameras.
  • I'm a little cloudy on this, but I believe H.265 is tricky on iOS devices and likely Android. New devices are including hardware decoders, but software support seem limited and most of what I've found recommends transcoding to H.264. For those using mobile apps, having to set up an H.264 stream for it will add yet more traffic to the network.

All of this is why many manufacturers have effectively ignored it. Yes, Hikvision, Dahua, Hanwha, Uniview all were pretty fast to market with H.265, but Axis, Bosch, Avigilon, etc., have either just started releasing gear with it or have not yet begun.

There are a TOTAL of 204 H.265 compatible cameras; Dahua has PRECISELY half that number in the Milestone ecosystem.

There are TWENTY TWO 4K cameras that support H.265 in Milestone... and of that total, Dahua has TWENTY ONE!

And.... NOW, THIS! IPC-HF8835F

Yes. A MICRO 4/3 sensor in a SURVEILLANCE camera. Do you think... we should doubt that 140dB WDR this time? With a Sony Starlight+ Box -- True 30 FPS at UHD ....?

http://www1.dahuasecurity.com/products/ipc-hf8835f-17961.html

This thing looks SERIOUS. I think it's just missing an outdoor housing. And given the rate at which Dahua seems to compel it's partners to move forward, I like their chances.

Given that Hikvision has smaller sensors, it seems to me that their 'prowess' as the king of China is in the software. Standard for them, in their "6-line series" is 1/2.5" ... whereas, Dahua is pretty focused on 1/1.7". At any moment the could find a way to improve their functionality and make the hardware play to the threshold.

I have some Hikvisions, and I grant, they are pretty impressive, cost:benefit.

But I believe if/when the opportunity presents itself, I will exploit the opportunity to go Dahua NUTS!

I will exploit the opportunity to go Dahua NUTS!

There has been a lot of that going around: Hackers Globally Attacking Dahua Recorders

In all seriousness, while Dahua is fast at releasing, we have seen enough cases where quality issues have not been worked through that I would advise caution. You may effectively become their unpaid beta tester.

Yes, possible. But I'm not a great target.

Excuse the probable idiocy of this question, but by saying " recorders" -- do we mean their NVRs? If so, I'm currently using Milestone, and kinda digging it. It hasn't even been a week yet.

I'll grant, I'm surprised that Bosch puts their dewarping plugin behind a paywall - after you've presumably spent $1,250 on the camera... but other than that, I'm sure I'll only learn more about it during the course of this month.

I'm very hopeful to find no 'deal breakers' and more and more ways to grow fond of the system.

Would I be mistaken thinking that using a different companies recording server behind a firewall would offer any protection? Or is it the cameras themselves that allow someone access to my video?

(As always John, thank you for taking the time to chime in)  :)

Essential+ is greyed out. It's something to look forward to when I buy the package -- however...... it's possible I'll switch to dahua just for the fact that they have more H.265 than anyone. :D

Yes. A MICRO 4/3 sensor in a SURVEILLANCE camera.

It’s a puny sensor compared to these SURVEILLANCE cameras.

The Micro 4/3 cameras are new (there actually a CVI model as well) and we've been waiting for them to actually ship in the US before testing.

But as #1 says, while that sensor is big, it's smaller than others, including Axis' Q1659 (APS-C) and Sony's VB770 (full 35mm). Granted, it's likely to be quite a bit less expensive, but likely not as drastic a low light improvement over ~1/2" models Dahua already sells.

The Sony is about $5k on eBay...

The Axis is like $7500.

The Dahua is about ~$400 from my dealer. (We're still establishing prices).... and even if it sucks, more people bringing bigger sensors to market is a good thing. :D

Ok, so your point is not

Yes. A MICRO 4/3 sensor in a SURVEILLANCE camera.

but

Yes. A MICRO 4/3 sensor in a SURVEILLANCE camera for a lot less than cameras with bigger sensors.

btw, the size of the Sony sensor is ~4X of the micro as well as 50% more resolution.

The Dahua is about ~$400 from my dealer.

That admittedly is a damn good price that I can’t readiy find on the Internet.  Whose your dealer?

So you are limited to buying larger more expensive lenses to match your large sensor?

Technology marches on - the latest 1/3" sensors are better than 1" sensors from a few years ago - don't be so easily swayed by a datasheet specification.

Test the camera as a package and in varying conditions.

Regarding Dahua IPC-HF8835F  I believe using 4/3" Sony IMX294 which is in sensor area about 8x bigger than IMX274 (1/2.5") which you probably referred as  ~1/2". So sensitivity improvement among Sony Starvis is expected big and much bigger when compare to older sensor. Price is not nice as Truman expected, realy not 400USD, say 4x~5x more. Sure still much lower than mentioned Sony/Axis.

You may find yourself in sparse company with that opinion.

Splain it to me Lucy...

I mean, smaller sensors in photography tend to do worse in low light; given that hikvision cameras ARE superior to most cameras (and certainly with a price parity) ... its hard to imagine this wizardry isn't a product of some very wise mathemetitians and software engineers...

Or, do you just think their sensors are SO superior, that their 1/2.5 is just better... than other companies <1/2" sensors?

1. They don’t write the SoC microcode.

2. They largely both use similar SoCs for their main lines.

3. There is not much you can do in real-time with an encoded image when it comes off the SoC, except put it on the wire.

4. Show some proof that Dahua imagers are generally larger across their main product lines.
