How Can I Store On Slower + Cheaper Drives? Or Must I Find An Appliance (QNAP, Etc) That Does This?

Things that need the fastest storage in my very limited experience are the most recent. Problems are rarely old events that Im surprised I need to resolve.

With my first NVR, the Dahua, when I used SSD space everything was awesome. Instant. And then, in an effort to obviously get some capacity of depth, I used larger spinning, drives; HGST enterprise UltraStar drives. It was basically painful to search via Smart PSS for the time I wanted to review and save.

SO, yes, I can

• "Do" RAID.
•  I could do JBOD (so that there's no degradation if [a] drive is lost.)

But, I'd rather have a tiered system of a few days worth of space on SSDs (I have a great deal on EVO 850 1TB drives) and then move that to spinning drives after 4 days -- max.

Is there a way to do this using Milestone Systems Express+ ?

Thanks

Another option is to switch to a different VMS that is faster so you don't have to use SSDs for storage.

If you have possibility to connect additional HDD on your server/PC it can be done easily with Express+:

1. Create additional volume from your HDD/HDD's (it can be RAID as well);

2. In Express+ Management Client go to your Recording server - Storage - Add archive and point to your new drive/volume. You can set up retention time/size as you done it in default storage settings.

That's it. You can use NAS storage via iSCSI or shared volume as well.

Awesome. Thank you.

I'm throwing out the knowledge and experience I have with RAID volumes' traditional "advantages" and "disadvantages".

For one thing, Hikvision says their bandwidth changes based on whether RAID is used or not - but doesn't explicitly say whether it's a bane nor benefit. It just says the bandwidth changes based on it being in RAID. I'd assume it's a benefit - but they don't say! lol

That's just an example, but many do it.

AND, the thing is that logically -- 400Mbps is NOTHING. Its a HALF of the bandwidth in said direction, and a nominal amount of video.

Lastly - do NVR appliances use specialized processors that are optimized for the functions of an NVR, such that an NVR will still have aspects in which it outperforms even the best CPU - because its purpose built...?

I just cannot tell if I'm missing out on abilities by not getting an appliance.

As always, thanks to all who help.
