Hikvision UK Raising Prices 2018

In an atypical move for Hikvision, Hikvision UK is raising prices, claims range from 6 to 12%.

For example, discussed in this LinkedIn post:

A Hikvision employee in that thread says that distributors asked for this:

The rise in price is actually by request of the distributors due to changes in GBP exchange rate vs the dollar, all their purchases are made in dollars and therefore margins have dropped recently, this is a uniform adjustment in their sell prices to bring that back in line.

That is fascinating. Usually, distributors request lower prices...

Another post on IPCamTalk from a Hikvision distributor says:

As of September 1st all hikvision products will be increasing in price by a 10 to 12% across all product ranges this is due to the £ falling in value against the $.

Looking at the GBP / USD exchange rate, the GBP has actually strengthened since earlier last year so not clear why now is the time to boost prices.

One thing for sure, this is another sign that the race to the bottom and the steep fall in pricing in the past few years has ended.

Thoughts?

change the scale to 1Y and you see the GBP dropped almost 10% since April, and it's the same level if you check Sep 2017.

Talking about biased articles, what about the poll that John was going to conduct?

Sure, here is 1Y and as you say it is the same as a year ago:

So if the exchange rate is literally unchanged from a year ago why is it being used as a reason to increase prices?

As for a poll, I am not sure what you are referring to. I searched my inbox for Dennis Ruban poll and this is the only match I found from January:

The easiest way would be ask subscribers, just create apollon a main page:

- IPVM is biased when it's about Hikvision

- IPVM is impartial

Is that what you want? If you want it, create the discussion and I'll insert the poll to it.

"So if the exchange rate is literally unchanged from a year ago why is it being used as a reason to increase prices?"

Further, if the exchange rate has steadily and significantly increased for the ~last quarter, why is it being used as a reason to increase prices now?

The only thing that makes sense (to me) is that Hik UK sales have not met their year over year revenue projections for 2018.

I don't know what the real reason Hikvision did this but the stated one is contradicted by facts.

More generally, when a company establishes a significant market share and natural further growth is difficult, raising prices are a sensible way to increase profits. Again, I don't know if that is what Hikvision is doing here but that would be economically understandable.

If you’re doing polls, how about how much do you trust your manufacturer?  With Hikvision, my answer would be 0 out of 10.
