Hikvision's Chinese government ownership is getting more mainstream press.

Nikki Asian Review ran a Hikvision profile including matter of fact declarations that:

  • "Hikvision, established in 2001 as a subsidiary of a state research center"
  • "Set up as a state enterprise, some 41.9% of Hikvision's shares are still held by the central government"
  • "Government support has certainly helped Hikvision to win contracts in China"
  • For Hikvision, "State ownership is a fact of life"

If this mainstream media attention continues, it is going to create a serious problem for Hikvision as their overseas employees, their partners and prospects have to confront the reality of what Hikvision is.

Some other interesting quotes:

"Hikvision's gross profit margin on foreign sales is also much wider than on domestic sales, at 47.7% versus 37% in the first half, according to Moody's."

and

"They have changed now," said Gloria Tsuen, senior analyst and vice president at Moody's Investors Service. "You can't depend on your parents forever."

Weighing in on the Hik imbroglio, I ask

What if Hikvision is a state-sponsored market bully AND an extremely well-run company with strong products and solutions?

I think they are both state controlled and extremely well run.

Look at Dahua, they are the opposite...
