Just a curiosity on my part - what names do these companies trade under in their home countries, and what meaning(s) do they have?

Dahua full name: Zhejiang Dahua Technologies Co., Ltd.

Hikvision full name: Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co Ltd

Uniview full name: Zhejiang Uniview Technologies Co., Ltd.

Hangzhou is the capital of Zheijang. I believe all 3 companies HQ are fairly close by.

Anyone with local Chinese knowledge, please share.

These seem very "western-friendly", at least moreso than I would have expected. I assumed that they'd work under different names at home.

"Dahua" may have been intended to help westerners at all. It does take some getting used to, but it's not complex. The other two are definitely pitched at a western audience though. This makes me wonder then, as an add-on question to those who might comment with some local Chinese knowledge, what is the local impression of these naming strategies?

Trafficware, a CUBIC Company

I was really hoping that one of them would be called somthing like "World Domination We Will Mercilisessly Destroy You Electonics, Clothing, and Food Packaging".

They already used that line in Die Hard:

John McClane: You throw quite a party. I didn't realize they celebrated Christmas in Japan.

Joseph Takagi: Hey, we're flexible. Pearl Harbor didn't work out so we got you with tape decks.

Thank you. I'm assuming that doesn't have any meaning?

I asked our Chinease colleagues and they have not heard that. The pronouciation of Hikvision in Chinese is very close to who it is said in English - "Hike"Vision

Thanks for that!

I've been using the "short i" pronounciation after hearing it somewhere.

I know its a competitor but any chance you can tell us how Dahua is normally pronounced? Daa-Whaa? Or?

I been trying to reach Dauhas US office but the phone number is no where to be found, they only have China listed on their website.

Does Dahua US have a diffrent website?

No one has confirmed or denied whether the website dahua-usa.com is legit, but if you want to try, here's what the 'contact us' page lists:

You could also try contacting Jeff Silverman or Joel Rieger, who are pre-massive-expansion boots-on-the-ground for Dahua in the U.S.

B, good luck :)

What would you like to talk to them about? They evidently make it hard on purpose.

Funny, we just want to know where we can buy Dauha. If they want to make their mark in North America, their going to have to make it easy to get access to their product!

They have not disclosed (yet), that they intend to support the sales of Dahua labeled product in North America. Without a brand it's hard to leave much of a mark.

I always smile when i see the LG logo. LG started life as Lucky Goldstar.

Dahua have appointed distributors in the UK to sell the Dahua branded product. Qvis and IC Realtime had the market between them up to this. It looked like Qvis and IC Realtime did not fully embrace HDCVI and maybe Dahua decided to appoint independant Dahua distributors. Anyone any thoughts on this?

Hey Jim, was there a press release about the Dahua branded product?

If they start selling branded Dahua in the UK, then there might even be English language tech support and readily available English language firmware!

Hi,

I don’t remember seeing a press release from Dahua, but I did get something from both of the UK distributors claiming they are the official distributors of Dahua in the UK.

IFSEC is on in 3 weeks and it will be interesting to see who is on the Dahua stand as their “Official Distributor /s”.

Regarding an English speaking Tech support, I think someone will have to be trained up on the distributor’s side.

I don’t think Dahua has tech reps that have good technical knowledge of the Dahua product range. In any conversations that I have had with Dahua tech reps they seem to specialise in a section / aspect of the product. If you ask for information outside of their area then they put you on to someone else.

For example: If you have a network question about a DVR and find someone who can answer it and then ask a follow up question about POS integration on the same machine chances are they won’t know and have to refer you to someone else. They need some tech reps that understand the product and the real world issues that installers face in the field.

Regards,

Jim
