HID Reader Opens Up Apple Pay

While deploying an HID mobile-ready reader, one of my tech's experienced that once he taps a reader with his iPhone(reproduced on iPhone 6 and iPhone X) it will bring up his Apple Pay.

It errors if you try and proceed with the transaction.  The current soft workaround is disabling your credit/debit card from your iPhone which will no longer prompt the apple wallet.

Deploying this system to in an executive environment will definitely bring up some strong questions. I understand HID has more important issues to handle, but this seems like a simple fix that would cause fewer headaches in the deployment stage. Has anyone experienced this?

I actually tested this. It happens in our offices, as well, on some readers, so I checked out what it was spitting out when I tried to finish the transaction. I'm not sure I have screenshots anymore, but it was sending a unique string via Wiegand each time, so it wasn't something that could be simply enrolled as a credential, nor was it simply my credit card number (which some thought it would be).

I believe this is totally intended functionality from the HID reader, though. Brian can correct me if I'm wrong, but there are legit credentials which integrate to the IOS Wallet which would need the reader to be able to recognize. Maybe they could add a dipswitch or a jumper to enable/disable NFC?

Yes.  We experience this along with "communicating with reader" notifications.  We have 7 Bluetooth readers deployed at our office and it is a pain in the butt.  It does not work reliably and we will not sell it to end users.  We have shared this with our HID rep and HID people at ISC West.  Nobody seemed to know what we are talking about!!!

I have tested it with Geovision access control system and each taping with iPhone it’s send random string of number code, that intentionally designed by apple to secure NFC purchases, but with LG phone it’s sends 1 code each tap  unique to that device and can be Use as access control credential works well on Geovision

This is worth a deeper look by us, and may help explain sporadic 'problems' with mobile.  Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks for the post, I will pass this on to a few of my customers to test. Tough times!

HID addressed this issue in a memo dating back to November 20, 2014.  The memo ends with "There is no reasonable action that can be taken by the HID Global development team, our partners, or our end-user customers to prevent the Apple Pay™application from launching when an enabled iPhone® 6 or iPhone® 6 Plus is presented to a contactless smartcard reader. A modification to the iOS software is the only reasonable change that can wholly address this behavior."

Also good luck trying to get you Apple Watch to work with it either. When you walk up you get the "communicating with reader" and nothing ever happens. Yeah I am also not comfortable with selling this solution yet either. I can't imagine the service calls and phone time with this.

I herd that apple is planning in the future to open the NFC chip for other uses beside Apple Pay, sound like the NFC can be use as access control credential

This is true. HID has done a trial for a few colleges I’ve been told. It’s about time. I love my Apple products but they are so slow to get with everyone else. Had they played nice with this years ago mobile credentials would most likely be more mainstream. Apple is sometimes like the “Old dogs” in the security industry. Takes them awhile to catch up sometimes.
