As various H.265 cameras and recorders are being released from Dahua, Samsung, Hikvision (outside of US), Vivotek, as well as numerous Hikuan OEMs, I was wondering if by some incredible luck any of these work between manufacturers.

Has anyone tried?

You mean from 3rd party VMSes?

Milestone confirms planned release of H.265 this year. Genetec already supports H.265. Other VMSes are working on and I suspect will come as more camera manufacturers announce H.265.

Or you could just (not) use ONVIF ;)

No, I mainly mean between various NVR appliances and cameras. So could the Hanwha h.265 camera work with a Dahua h.265 recorder, and/or vice versa?

Not as ONVIF, of course but each NVR using their own (limited) integration.

I doubt it, but since many may be using the same HiSilicon SOC, it's possible I suppose.

If not, then we really are taking a step backwards, since under h.264 there is usually a way, ONVIF or not, to get these things working together.
