Genetec Stratocast Experiences

Hi all, I searched on the forum for Stratocast experiences and usage statistics or something, but only found 1 relevant post of 2012, about the time it was launched I guess.

Stratocast sounds interesting for (high) residential and SME, but apparently it is not much discussed here. Any ideas why? Are there any good/bad experiences?

Thanks.

Serge, we have a 2015 test - Genetec Cloud Tested that includes Stratocast. I am not sure how much is new since then, I'll leave that to Ethan and others.

We have one of our sites on Stratocast, went live with it a couple of months back.  So far it has been a positive experience.  It is a small shopping center, feeds back to our Police Department (safe city scenario).  I like it because it doesn't make a direct connection to our network and we don't intrude on the businesses network.

Hi Ryan, thanks for the comment.

The fact that it does not intrude the business network was the reason for my interest in this system. Though via a Stratocast helpdesk chat I learned that there is port forwarding etc needed is that right?

I am very interested how you positioned yourself between the shopping mall and the police department, because that is one of our mayor challenges. Can you elaborate on that a bit? How did you design your (recurrent) revenue?

I work for the municipality, managing the VMS is part of the job.  We have a public/private partnership with local businesses.  Our PD has access to the exterior cameras.  We started the program years ago before cloud VMS was available.  There are many sites that provide VPN or web access, with a host of different VMS platforms, not fun to manage logins and software clients.  I suggested the Stratocast to one of the newer shopping centers.  We worked with a local Genetec provider for the licensing and equipment.  We used Axis equipment, the integrator punched in the OAK numbers in the Stratocast software, I plugged them in and they worked.  I don't really recall making any port forwarding changes on the firewall.

That's correct. You enter in the OAK (owner authentication key) and the serial number of the camera. Stratocast sets up the connection from there. There's no port forwarding required (with Axis at least, not sure about others), but you have to make sure AVHS and/or Axis 1-Click (I don't remember which) is turned on in the camera.

This video shows the process (from our test):

Just checked, and Vivotek cameras do require port forwarding for the video stream and control ports. Axis still do not.

Neither Axis nor Vivotek cameras require port forwarding. They also are adding support for Hanwha but there's not much info available on that process yet.

There is a Stratocast YouTube channel which has a lot of useful videos, more than just marketing material. They actually show steps to adding and managing cameras, as well.

Correction: Vivotek cameras do not require inbound ports to be open. They do require outbound traffic to be allowed on multiple ports, though, which is most often enabled by default in firewall/router rules.
