Exacq - Build Your Own Server Or Use NVR??

Hi, has anyone here built windows servers for exacq?

I have done it before using a desktop i7-8th gen using up to 10 4MP cameras and had great results with no issues.

Now i need to setup a server that will run 20  4MP cameras and 6  12MP cameras.   Does anyone have any recommendations on this? or should I just be going with the A series NVR?

thanks

We have a recent survey covering Favorite Video Storage / Server Manufacturers 2019. In summary, many integrators are using VMS manufacturer-based appliances, especially in small - midsized systems.

The most commonly cited COTS server manufacturer was Dell, with at least a quarter of integrators using their hardware to build a system. That number is even higher if you account for Dell OEM (e.g. BCD, Avigilon, Genetec, etc) based systems.

Part of it comes down to, what do you consider building a Windows server? Buying each component separately and bolting everything together, or customizing a pre-built COTS offering? Exacq offers a Configuration Calculator to help specify a server based on cameras/throughput.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I read through the survey. I have looked through the Exacq configuration website and it looks like the basic recommended server (A-series) is a windows 10 desktop  with and i5 or i7 processor and 16GB ram dual GB NIC .  Estimated network throughput is around 300 Mbps with storage of 20 TB for 30 days.

I am looking to find out if anyone has or is building custom PC that works reliably for 25-30 cameras and what type of hardware they are using(desktop/server), or if most are just spending the 5k+ for an exacq  server.

Sometimes we roll our own COTS. Take into account form factor. Some jobs require rackmount ready equipment, other take 'tower' builds. We have reliably built systems that handle over 64 cameras.

From several posts and threads, I have gathered most integrators feel like servers sold by a VMS manufacturer are overpriced for the hardware specs.

We always use Dahua, and are slowly going VMS and server installs so this is new to us.

We have used this company once or twice, and now have two servers on order that can handle 45 cameras each, and supposedly 90 cameras in a failover situation. RAID,  16 GB,  3 x6TB HDD for less than the 5K. The owner seems pretty knowledgeable.

Thanks, I will check with them next week.

Do you know what processor you are using in them and if it is windows 10 or Windows Server OS?

Thanks for your help, I am thinking this is equal to the Z-series Exacq servers?

I am not familiar with servers, processors and have no idea about Exacq's equipment.

Building your own is fun and rewarding. However it would be wise to evaluate the customers expectations, policies and warranty -> life cycle support. Other than that, do it and see how it goes, jump in. Your call.

Often use Dell and add our own hard drives for video.

How many cameras are you running?
