Do You Buy Refurbs?

Curious, after reading this Consumer Reports article making a case for.

If it was factory refurbished and there was a decent discount (like Apple refurb), then yes. If it is something I can fix, like a PC, probably yes. If it is a no name brand of something strange where I'm not likely to find replacement parts, probably not. Ideally you should be saving 25% when buying refurbs. When I used to work for an electronics wholesaler, we sold a ton of refurb laptops and TVs. This was years ago, but our goal was to buy at half off retail and sell at 75% of retail. We never had problems moving deals sticking to this plan.

Did you have more returns on the new than the refurbs?

Some say refurbs are more reliable because they have been tested by a human before being shipped, thereby eliminating the vast majority of DOA's.

Though, in the long run, I'm not sure...

I would say they were very close to even. If anything, a small edge to new, but nothing worth noting.
