Need Suggestions On A PC Build For Milestone Essentials+ VMS

I'd like to create a baseline computer to offer our customers and would like your help and input in doing so.

Most of my work is in the residential space.

What I've found is that most NVR solutions are not user-friendly for our customers, while Milestone's free VMS (<8 cams of course) is.

Most of our customers need less then 8 cameras.  The main use will be from an HDMI output into a single TV or video matrix for all TVs and then of course from mobile.

What suggestions do you have?

For IPVM testing we run Intel NUC mini-PCs with SSD OS drives and a 1TB HDD for video retention. They easily support 8 cameras, and we've tested them with 10+ different VMSes.

This is basically the build we use (Amazon Link), and add in a 1TB or 2TB storage drive, depending on the days of retention and motion.

We build them ourselves, and might not as cheap as a COTS Mini Tower PC, but have been reliable from my experience, and are easy to locate almost anywhere you have decent airflow.

I'm sure there are integrators that can weigh in on this as well.

I am assuming for the storage drives you are using external?

I think some of them are configured that way (recording to a NAS), but most of the ones I use have an internal M.2 drive for the OS, and a 2.5" SATA for video storage.

The NUCs we use have support for 2 internal drives, some of the more compact ones only support 1 internal drive.

Corbin,

If you going to drive cameras with more than HD resolution, for example 4k resolution cameras, I would strongly suggest you choose an Intel processor that supports the Intel Quick Sync Graphics for hardware accelerated video decoding.  It makes a big difference.  The Intel Dual-Core i5-7260U processor does support this in the Intel NUC.

I believe Milestone Essentials requires Windows Pro.
