A team of German engineers says it has developed an algorithm for cameras in nursing homes that can detect when a person falls and then alert nursing staff. The Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics will present on the technology at CeBiT 2014.

In contrast with typical surveillance systems, the software will only detect events and send alerts. Only when a nurse acknowledges an alert does it display a live view from the camera.

Aside from not recording events, this seems like it could be something big box stores would be interested in. I'm surprised they didn't mention retail as one of their potential markets because of the high payouts that come from slip-and-fall lawsuits.

What are some potential pros and cons of this technology?
