Control Room Solutions - Remote Monitoring Or Offsite Monitoring

Hi IPVM

Hik-Central, Milestone, i-Sentry, Sureview Systems, Cathexis..........too name but a few!

We are looking for a solution for our control room that will allow us to remotely monitor sites around the country, no matter the camera or system installed in these sites (within reason of course), with reasonable, preferably once off license fee structures, and that will allow us to be competitive in what is quickly becoming a very saturated market.

Every representative of any brand we have looked at, understandably, pulls out all the stops when recommending their product.  Sales Fluff to the hilt.  The presentation videos look great, the brochures, the specs, the websites, even the testomonials - all aspects of the marketing done so well, in every case, that leaves us scratching our heads after weeks of presentations.

What we are looking for is actual, real world advice from people like us, on the ground, or in the trenches, so to speak.

What works, what doesn't?

What actually integrates, what doesn't?

What cost more after implementing and what offered you exactly what you were sold?

I am going to use this "survey" as a pivotal point in our decision making process.

Too all that have taken the time to read my splurb, and more so to all of you who will take the time to answer me honestly with your thoughts, experiences, suprises as well as dissapointments, thank you.

To be clear - we are currently doing offsite monitoring using Geovision Software, which offers us "Black Screen" technology as well as remote management of sites.

Although the systems work well when Geovision is installed at the remote sites, we find that we are limited to the what we are able to bring in.

Hence the change.

We will want the option to add remote storage / recording capabilities - hence a fully upgradeable, integrateable, future proofing solution that we will not need to throw out in 5 to 10 years as technology changes.

Depending on the size of your operation, or how much money you are going to spend, any manufacturer should be able to put you in touch with actual customers who are using their products for similar situations.

We use Honeywell MaxPro VMS, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Wasn't my choice to use, and I just have to service it. At every site is also Honeywell, so we don't have to worry too much about trying to interface different product.

But I know when other people have considered Honeywell, for what ever reason, they've done tours through our facility to see how we operate. Milestone, Exacq, Aviligon, what ever should be able to set up something similar. That way you're not just seeing a fancy marketing thing that's probably been tailored to look amazing.

That being said, from my own experience, you'll want to try and standardize on your VMS and Recorders at the other end. I understand that's not always possible, and especially right away, but when dealing with remote sites it's just easier.

Maybe it's because I, unfortunately, don't have a ton of experiences with VMS outside of MaxPro, but Honeywell claims to be onvif compliant, but it's such a pain to get anything onvif to actually connect to MaxPro. Seems like anything that isn't Honeywell (and even some stuff that is branded Honeywell) is hard to connect with it. I can only assume other VMS manufacturers maybe do a better job of this...but generally when I hear of control room type situations VMS and Recorder software seem to be the same.

Just to recap/reframe this correctly: You're looking for feedback on setting up a video monitoring central station?

This list may help give you an idea of players in the space:

With that in mind, with segments are you targeting as customers? Is it video only, or are you interested in monitoring other systems like intrusion or fire as well?

Just trying to flesh out your question a bit more and see if I grasp what you are endeavouring to accomplish.

I really like contemplating this type of proposition and may be able to offer some experience in facilitating structures like the following.

Customer 01
    location 01
        Milestone Windows VMS server 01
    location 02
        Milestone Windows VMS server 02 - 04
Customer 02
    location 01
        Exacq VMS Windows server 01
    location 02
        Exacq VMS Windows server 02
    location 03
        Exacq VMS Linux server 01
    location 04
        GeoVision VMS Windows server 01
        GeoVision windows DVR 01 - 02
Customer 03
    location 01
        DW Linux VMS server 01 - 10
    location 02
DW Linux VMS server 01 -08

Monitoring station maintained VPN's:

Will customer VPN gateways (C1,C2,C3) provide VMS Client, OS, logs, alerts, ect. to control room staff for all locations ?

Are "multiple" VMS clients, remote server components or Public Cloud interfaces  used by the control room staff ?
or
Will a single convergent client/server application be used to converge video streams/events from the servers or cloud accounts for each location ?

Hi Lee

Thank you for your comments.

You are correct that each site has different solutions / brands for their local VMS.

We are looking to get our control room onto, hopefully, a single platform which allows us to bring everything in, and manage, and react to activations (video), etc, etc, etc...

These sites do not have control rooms locally per say, and only view the video reactively.  Most of the sites have security officers with a monitor and the cameras live onsite.

I hope this helps?

You are going to run into trouble at the very best unless your edge devices are similar. Whilst some products will say they are onvif compliant there will always be some limitation waiting to bite you along the way, like you already say. Your best bet is to look for a facility management system from a provider with an active R&D who can customise it to talk independently to the different cameras and recorders on your sites using customised http APIs or similar; and then agregate this information at the core. For example for live viewing the API could authenticate and pull live video directly from the cameras or recorders and for footage the API could authenticate with the specific recorders to stream the video.

Check out SureView Systems Immix Platform, they have the video drivers for most platforms already and it can be modular as needed for integrating video to full blown Central Station Automation or PSIM.

Here is a page with some of thier intergations https://sureviewsystems.com/partners/ .
