Chinese Facial Recognition System Confuses Bus Ad For Jaywalker

So the system picked up her face on the bus ad and reported her as jaywalking

Whenever the system identifies jaywalkers, it posts their photo onto a large public screen to ‘name and shame’ the perpetrators. It showed Dong’s face and name, though it incorrectly spelled her surname as “Ju,” along with her government ID. There was also text that said she had broken the law.

I am curious what, if any, video surveillance based facial recognition can overcome the general risk of identifying a picture of a person as a person. Liveness detection, of course, can be attempted but it's pretty hard to do when you are trying to capture faces over such a large / deep area.

The WSJ did a video last week where they tricked a Real Networks facial recognition system at a US school using a picture of the headmaster:
