Axis Revives The Red Camera Light: Useful Accessory Or Odd Throwback?

Just noticed this on Axis' site today under accessories, a red LED light to show camera status (or otherwise triggered by events):

My first reaction was, "Wow, that's old school", thinking of the blinking pilot lights which used to be so common on cameras (and dummy cameras even still), but I can see some actual applications for it, as well.
