I have a bunch of outdoor IP cams (mainly Axis) and I always connect them using STP to a surge protector and they work well - no issues.
I have one that's mounted to a tree and installed the same way: CAT6 STP w/drain; terminated as STP on both sides The device-end goes to a sheilded RJ45 with external drain wire (wire wrapped under crimp), and the switch side terminates to an ITWLinx surge suppressor. It terminates to a 110 block (the shield is captured by a set-in crimp connection) and the shield is connected to ground. The ITWLinx is connected via 6AWG to building ground via copper ground cable. The ITWLinx connects to the switch via UTP patch cord.
