Avigilon is discontinuing the last of its JPEG2000 cameras and joins the rest of the (non-Mobotix) world as H.264 / MJPEG providers.

Mobots everywhere exclaim "But we have h.264 cameras now". :)

I believe that is only for SIP but new or upgraded Mobotix cameras will eventually support H.264.

They're even claiming ONVIF/h.264 in mxmanagement, nothing like eating crow for breakfast.

As for JPEG2000, its certainly was a major technological improvement over MJPEG, with the whole progressive thing feeding right into HDSM.

Though H.264 has many advantages, back in the day it didn't seem possible to encode 30MP images using h.264, though obviously they have worked around it.

"didn't seem possible to encode 30MP images using h.264"

Which is a reasonable rationale; the problem was when proponents criticized H.264 being worse quality. H.264 is no better quality now...

And then there was one... I always thought this looked like pretty decent camera on paper at least. 20 MP and 30 FPS, JPEG2000 and h.264.

I guess the big problem was overall stability; even after numerous firmware patches they would inevitably just fall face forward...

BTW, here's Ampleye's take on the whole "parking lot overview/license plate detail" issue.

Ampleye is its own worse enemy. They had an opportunity but could not capitalize on it. For example, they could never give us a straight answer to our questions, even though a few years ago, an Avigilon 20MP competitor would have gotten them a lot of attention.

They did snag Indigovision as an OEM...

btw, unless Ampleye changed something recently, H.264 is only for a low resolution stream. The 20MP historically required JPEG2000. Also, another weird Ampleye move, they require entering in personal information to access their datasheet. What year are they in?

Yes, they apparently couldn't get around the h.264 problem like Avigilon must have.

What year are they in?

2000.
