ASIS NYC Makes ISC East Look Like ISC West

May 18, 2018The exhibit area is about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of ISC East. Some exhibitors said it used to be in the same area as ISC East but was moved to the opposite smaller side of the Javits.

It is a bit bigger than ADI Expo, to give another sense of size. However, given it is in midtown Manhattan, it certainly brings larger end users though not a lot to the show floor as exhibitors comments on traffic were, at best, mixed.
The most interesting no-show was Hikivision. No booth, which is surprising since they have recently attended almost every event, even smaller ones than this.
Avigilon, Axis, Genetec, Hanwha, Milestone, Vivotek, and many more were there.
Dahua was there too but no AI marketing, just more conventional Smart H.265 and ePoE.
A number of people were talking about Arecont and their Ch 11...

May 18, 2018This can't be true! I saw so many security manufacturers on LinkedIn talking about what an awesome show they were anticipating. There were more "stop by our booth!" messages than I can recall. You must have filmed this during a lunch break or something, because there is no way this show could have been such a dud, too many manufacturers were clearly counting on it and putting their best people on the show floor.

As for best people, there were definitely some senior people there but it was generally those senior people who lived in the NY metropolitan area.

Did you get a chance to stop by Avigilon's booth to learn about their newest products and technologies? Even Hikvision is enamored with Avigilon Motorola's Avigilon division.

May 18, 2018John, I attended this show about 2 years ago and was similarly disappointed. I thought NYC would certainly bring in the folks but it didn't.

May 18, 2018From an exhibitor/manufacturer perspective, I don't look at it in terms of how many people attend but what type of attendee shows up. In many cases, one or two good quality prospects are all you need to pay for the show.
It comes down to the cost of being there vs not being there.
On a side note, I thing this show should be cut down to one day.

May 18, 2018One of the exhibitors said that next year ASIS told them the plan was for the show floor to be just 1 day.
As for one or two good quality prospects, that's a few thousand dollars per prospect, given the $2,500 price for a 10 x 10 and the cost to staff / setup:
Depending on where else you are getting leads and how big or a dollar volume you are selling, it could be worth it.

I wonder what happened. I attended ASIS NYC for several years (but not since 2016) and it grew larger every year. ASIS NYC had been growing as fast as ISC East had been shrinking, and I've been wondering for some time when the two shows would merge.

May 18, 2018Hurricane Sandy nearly killed ISC East in 2012, and ASIS NYC stepped in to fill the void. Every year since, ISC got a little smaller, and ASIS got a little bigger. I would say that ASIS NYC 2016 was only a little smaller than ISC East 2016.
I actually did hit ISC East this year. It was pretty big. It was my impression that ISC East this year was the biggest it's been in a long time.
I have no explanation for what happened to ASIS, except to say that my LinkedIn feed too was full of manufacturers and reps all excited about ASIS, leading me to believe that it took them by surprise as well.

I don't think ASIS took them by surprise. I think that the majority of people in the security industry, particularly sales people, have no real social media aptitude. Every trade show it is the same thing from almost all of them "Come to our booth", "Make sure you stop by booth 12345!", "Excited to see old customers and meet new ones in our booth, #000", etc. It is like there is some secret contest to see who can be the least inventive and inspiring.

May 18, 2018Lol, I did not even go to Manhattan for ASIS NYC. It just worked out that while I was there for something else, the event was being held. I also don't think it's a bad event for people who work in Manhattan.

May 18, 2018What if instead of ISC East and ASIS NYC competing against each other with similar types of shows in same venue, ASIS opted for a different location? Javits Center is a rather large venue for such a small event. Just my two cents

May 18, 2018Probably smart. It's not like New York is short of venues, after all. And most of those venues are cooler, more comfortable, and easier to get to then the Javits.
Holding a teeny tiny little itty bitty meeting in a cavernous space like the Javits just drives home how small and insignificant our industry is. Nothing is more disheartening than having to walk through three or four other events, all of which look more interesting, just to get to our little tucked away corner of the hall.

May 18, 2018There was a time when ISC East alternated between NYC and Orlando. Let ISC have NYC and ASIS can take Orlando back.
Unless you have been on the business end of working with Jacobs Javits you would not fully appreciate that it sucks and the general expense of NYC is tough on the budget as well not only for the exhibitors, but the attendees as well.
Tough sell to me. I would rather go to Las Vegas instead or Orlando.

May 18, 2018Considering the event is organized by the NY ASIS chapter for their local members, I am not sure they are overly interested in holding it in Orlando.
As Ari mentioned, there are a number of other more easily accessible venues in New York where ASIS could hold this.
From what I saw with all the construction nearby, just getting to Javits was a chore, not to mention parking. Only subway access is the Hudson Yards 7 station.

May 18, 2018I had the opportunity to speak with a few end users with real opportunities, so I was happy with my results. As I have said before, you get out of these shows what you put in. I do agree that a venue other than Javits would be nice, and I can confirm that I was also told the plan is to shorten the show to one day instead of two and reduce the booth cost.
