A few more points from the article:
a new AI security cam built by Japanese telecom giant NTT East and startup Earth Eyes Corp. (see Japanese only website)
“common errors” by the AI Guardman included misidentifying both indecisive customers (who might pick up an item, put it back, then pick it up again) and salesclerks restocking shelves as potential shoplifters.
the camera would go on sale at the end of July, with an up-front price of around $2,150 and a monthly subscription fee of $40 for cloud support. NTT says it hopes to introduce the camera to 10,000 stores in the next three years.
Key points will include having someone monitoring locally to evaluate (there will be many errors), how many cameras are needed (it could be a lot and at their price it would cost a small fortune) and how many shoplifters they catch.
I have not heard anyone else publicizing this but surely different companies are working on developing this.
Oh, and I believe a correct observation from Hacker News that the open source software they are using is non-commercial use only.
If you can cover your body with clothing there is no reason you cannot cover your face.
